Well, to be fair, the book that Precious is based off of is sort of an anthology of true stories about horrible shit happening to different people, all of said terrible shit being dumped onto one person for the sake of a movie, so I can see how it could come off as too extreme for some people to be able to sympathize with.

Tomatoes are a fruit
They aren't, though. The entire "tomatoes are a fruit" movement seems to have been started by people who decided that culinary definitions are just naff, they're going to redefine fruit as it is used in everyday speech so that it's identical to what is called a fruit in botany. Yet no one calls cucumbers or wheat "fruit".
Millions of people unfortunately suffer like that, anyone who is pompous enough to call bullshit on a merritt of to much suffering deserves no accommodation.

In Sri Lanka there were only 31 cases of Malaria in 1962, 17 in 1963, but more than a million cases in 1968 after the use of DDT was banned. In 1970 the US National Academy of Science reported that "in a little more than two decades, DDT has prevented 50 million human deaths from malaria." Similar statements were made by the WHO. It's from a book called "The March of Unreason" by Dick Taverne (Who is a Liberal-Democrat Lord.)
You can read it in it's entire context here (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=LKk0mBrir7wC&pg=PT230&lpg=PT230&dq=By+the+early+1960%27s+it%27s+%28DDT%29+use+had+ virtually+eliminated+malaria+from+southern+Europe, +the+Caribbean+and+parts+of+east+and+south-east+Asia.+In+Sri&source=bl&ots=Z1lfSH1iDJ&sig=XRr8Nzkb8dPTI4yhc_sAETujCZU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=fB5sVLGSKJDkapqjgJAM&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=By%20the%20early%201960%27s%20it%27s%20%28DDT%29 %20use%20had%20virtually%20eliminated%20malaria%20 from%20southern%20Europe%2C%20the%20Caribbean%20an d%20parts%20of%20east%20and%20south-east%20Asia.%20In%20Sri&f=false)
While I don't agree with him politically, I don't think you can't really deny that the discontinuation of DDT led to a massive rise in malaria cases, which in turn led to more deaths from malaria.

Where are all of these scientists you speak of?
Malaria is reemerging in endemic-disease countries of South America. We examined the rate of real growth in annual parasite indexes (API) by adjusting APIs for all years to the annual blood examination rate of 1965 for each country. The standardized APIs calculated for Brazil, Peru, Guyana, and for 18 other malaria-endemic countries of the Americas presented a consistent pattern of low rates up through the late 1970s, followed by geometric growth in malaria incidence in subsequent years. True growth in malaria incidence corresponds temporally with changes in global strategies for malaria control. Underlying the concordance of these events is a causal link between decreased spraying of homes with DDT and increased malaria; two regression models defining this link showed statistically significant negative relationships between APIs and house-spray rates. Separate analyses of data from 1993 to 1995 showed that countries that have recently discontinued their spray programs are reporting large increases in malaria incidence. Ecuador, which has increased use of DDT since 1993, is the only country reporting a large reduction (61%) in malaria rates since 1993. DDT use for malaria control and application of the Global Malaria Control Strategy to the Americas should be subjects of urgent national and international debate. We discuss the recent actions to ban DDT, the health costs of such a ban, perspectives on DDT use in agriculture versus malaria control, and costs versus benefits of DDT and alternative insecticides.

many countries have voluntarily given up DDT because of its toxicity, its damage to wildlife, the existence of more potent alternatives, the existence of more cost-effective alternatives, and the fact that mosquitoes have been becoming resistant to DDT since the 60s and in many countries it just doesn't work any more at all. yeah, it worked originally, and it worked very well, but it has a high cost of use (not talking strictly monetary) and nobody died because the US banned DDT.

So? Is there something more recent which provides another reason for increases in malaria incidence after the discontinuation of DDT spraying? I would like to read it

The WHO still recommends its use in combating malaria.
As for insecticide resistance:
DDT can still be effective against resistant mosquitoes, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDT#cite_note-PLoS1-94)and the avoidance of DDT-sprayed walls by mosquitoes is an additional benefit of the chemical. For example, a 2007 study reported that resistant mosquitoes avoided treated huts. The researchers argued that DDT was the best pesticide for use in IRS (even though it did not afford the most protection from mosquitoes out of the three test chemicals) because the others pesticides worked primarily by killing or irritating mosquitoes – encouraging the development of resistance to these agents.
and here is that study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1934935/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDT#cite_note-mrc-92)

That link doesn't really disprove anything I've said.
When a mosquito strain that had previously been eliminated returned to South Africa, it was resistant to the pyrethroid insecticides that had replaced DDT.
"The resulting increase in malaria cases and deaths was epidemic," Bouwman said. Cases soared from 4,117 in 1995 to 64,622 in 2000. "South Africa had to fall back on DDT, and still uses it in areas where other chemicals would have a risk of failure," he said.

This could mean a lot of things. If it's said to a transsexual who is abused because of their gender identity, then it's definitely some stupid shit. If it's said to a person who does not stay true to their principles or modifies their personality to suit others or because of a fear that others will not like him/her, then it's good advice.

I was in a discussion online about 'patriotism' and I was basically pointing out that it's a poison, an irrational devotional to a fictitious creation of human society, but the responses I got were "that's nationalism, not patriotism. nationalism is bad and patriotism is good" or something to that extent....
If online debates were an olympic sport, they'd win a gold medal for that sort of mental gymnastics. Sure there are nuanced differences between nationalism and patriotism but the two are so wrapped up in each other that it's just blind ignorance to pretend that there's some gaping chasm between the two.

Standing in line at the grocery store yesterday morning, and an elderly woman in front of us is trying to make small talk and she turns to my partner, who is Mexican (which I'm sure was a complete coincidence), and starts talking about "all the killings in Mexico", at which point she proceeds to explain that "it's so dangerous down there because there aren't enough border patrol agents" (exact quote). It's like she had little snippets of anti-immigrant talking points memorized but she couldn't quite figure out what order they were supposed to go in.

No shit. What's the state supposed to do? Let the poor pay for things by accumulating increasing amounts of household debt? Oh, wait...
Also, clearly the richest and poorest people in a country should pay the same tax rate. It's not as if paying even a smaller percentage of one's income in taxes could put an even greater strain on household budgets for the poor than a large percentage would on a rich household. Oh, wait...

Get anyone who is younger, they will blame the lack of work, or lack of housing, or low wages on foreigners. It's not the first time I've come across the "communism could only work on a small-scale" argument, which is bizarre because it can only work globally. Another dumb thing I heard is about how apparently alcohol makes it so you don't get cold
This is actually true, in a sense. When you're cold, your capillaries constrict, restricting blood flow to the surface of your skin. It's your body's way of staying warmer longer. Alcohol causes the skin to flush, bringing warm blood back to the surface of the skin so you feel warmer. However, it actually makes you colder faster, because all that warm blood cools much more rapidly when it is near the surface. Many drunks have died from hypothermia for that reason.

“The purpose of the Communists in Hollywood is not the production of political movies openly advocating Communism. Their purpose is to corrupt non-political movies — by introducing small, casual bits of propaganda into innocent stories and to make people absorb the basic principles of Collectivism by indirection and implication. Few people would take Communism straight, but a constant stream of hints, lines, touches and suggestions battering the public from the screen will act like drops of water that split a rock if continued long enough. The rock that they are trying to split is Americanism.”
at the infamous October 1947 House Un-American Activities Committee hearings — a parade of “friendly witnesses” (including Ayn Rand, Gary Cooper, Ronald Reagan and Walt Disney) came before the committee to insinuate and weave dark tales of Communist infiltration and subversion in the movie business.

you all remember the show columbo (similar to columbia/colombia), I always thought that murder she wrote trumped it x10 but there are some good avatar opportunities since the guy looks completely senile 100% of the time and you all are also senile most of the time and probably cops.Peter Falk, the actor who played Columbo, recalling odd moments: "The Rumanian government called the American ambassador and they had a meeting. They've got a grievance problem in Rumania. What's the problem? They've got this show from America that's very popular. It's so popular that they play it on Friday and Saturday nights because the people who can't see it on Friday insist that they get to see it right away. Now, it is true that the Rumanian government has strict import restrictions. However, in this case, they've got every episode that has been made. But the people don't believe this. They think the restrictions are to blame for no more Columbos. Would it be possible to have this guy—Columbo—talk to the Rumanian people? Now they call the State Department and the State Department calls me to make a film. So I end up in a hotel room at one in the morning. They've got a camera set up and I'm speaking Rumanian phonetically. I say, 'Put down your guns. Be patient. Your government is not responsible. There'll be more Columbus.'"

I have a friend here who during the previous American election said she opposed Obama because he is a 'socialist'. She knew about my left wing views, but she was pretty surprised when I responded with "well, I *am* a socialist and I *wish* Obama was". This took her off guard because I don't think she expected a person to admit that they are a socialist.
On the one hand, I want to say that she isn't very politically aware. On the other hand, she was here enrolled in a course in global studies. There's a point where your America-centric world view has to be broken, especially when you are studying in Asia.

I suppose it depends on how much you can compartmentalize identity. Cops can be genuinely very nice people, but in their capacity as cops they are nevertheless enforcers for oppressive institutions. "Cop" does not have to be a label that provides a holistic description of identity in order to argue that cops, as cops, are assholes. That's true even if there are isolated individual cops who would cross over to the other side in the event of an impending revolution.
PhoenixAsh
30th May 2015, 10:44
The debate about cops often hinges on misconceptions and miscommunication.
It is not about whether or not individuals are good or bad people... but about where the class interests are.
I know CEO's and owners of companies who are very decent, very good people who genuinely think they have the best interests of their employees at hart and will go out of their way to help them. That does not negate that their class interests...their economic interests....are diametrically opposed to that of their employees and is in fact based on a model of exploitation and profit maximalisation....and maintaining the system that works to the disadvantage of the workers & unemployed.
The same goes for cops. Whether or not an individual cop is a good person is irrelevant. The institution of the police is entirely based on maintaining the proper function of the current system and they are litterally paid to see to its continued existence. Whatever the reason they became cops and however good their intentions may have been to become cops.
To that effect it is also immaterial that cops sometimes help the average citizen or prevent/solve crime against workers...because that flows out of the primary function of ensuring the proper and unobstructed functioning of the economic and hierarchical reality.
The function of protecting citizens, workers and everybody else could be achieved in other ways. The institution of the police as it is now is not the only means to do so.
Starting a debate separating these issues is often more successful

Stupid is when someone says the Jews control the worldIt's actually the Catholics, with the Vatican, Jesuits and/or Opus Dei somehow exercising total power over everything.
Or perhaps it's the Illuminati, with ideologically confused twenty-somethings unironically repeating 200-year-old monarchist attacks on republican governments ("THE AMERICAN AND FRENCH REVOLUTIONS WERE SATANIC PLOTS AGAINST CHRISTENDOM") just because they know modern governments do not actually represent "the people" but can't quite figure out why or how that is the case.
Also JFK was going to single-handedly defeat every damned enemy of freedom which ever existed (the Fed, Illuminati, Jews, rouge elements of the Roman Catholic Church, the CIA, the FBI, international organized crime, international communism, the British, etc.) until he was killed by them.

What were some more stupid shit I heard? The Donald Drumpf propagandists,
some right-winger said that God exists because man shares the same attributes as God does, therefore God must exist (if you invert that logic and follow it in the other direction however...)
and then some right-winger know-it-all gripped about free markets in the United States. When US capitalism prior to 1980s was state capitalist, this guy continued to claim it was ´free market´ whatever that means. What evidence did he provide to prove that the Industrial capitalism was essentially proto-neoliberal...? Wait for it... Milton Friedman! Yeah, a guy from the 1980s who more or less created this neoliberal ideology. The irony was lost on him I´m afraid. I shut him up with the Robber Barons and the Rockefellers, to show how ´free´ these markets were, ´cuz you know, he was already aware of those facts and conveniently forgot them. After all, I was the one who was dumb and ignorant of history, and he was kind enough to teach me that history.
I also talked to a liberal who essentially believes that capitalism will develop into an international centralized bureaucratic one world bourgeois state which would regulate capitalism in a moral, ethical, efficient, state-regulated manner!? WTF!? I told him that he´s more utopian than I was. Honestly, how likely is it that the bourgeoisie will suddenly let the state regulate them in the first place, let alone this whole one world government shtick and the ´ethics´ of the State, it´s policies and it´s interests? I mean, so much bullshit to dissect here, and I´m too tired. It was a ridiculous claim in my humble opinion.
He thinks communism is utopian but he believes that ´true capitalism´ can only be under this one world bourgeois supranational state which, you know, will just suddenly decide to work in the interests of the working class and not the capitalist class.
Yup. Seems legit. Anyway, poor composition skills I´m tired and rushed. Sorry.

It was known as the "theory of convergence" and basically held that the economies of the West and East were increasingly similar owing to technological development. National planning was seen as necessary to erase the defects of capitalism while the Soviets were said to have been introducing more and more market policies as a natural result of having a developed economy. With technology erasing any real distinctions, the Cold War would lose its reason to exist and the brotherhood of man would be established.
In the 1980s and 90s this was replaced with neo-liberalism which held that state intervention hampered rather than assisted economic growth, technological progress, and cooperation between states.

When People imply that overweight people cannot be attractive or 'healthy', as they are.
The demonizing and illogical hatred for overweight people is almost comical if it wasn't so depressing.
