William Mandel made a name for himself in the 1940s-80s as someone who analyzed Soviet affairs from a sympathetic perspective, obviously in contrast to the vast majority of Sovietologists. I received permission from his two sons to scan any of his books, but his best known are Soviet Women (written in 1975) and Soviet But Not Russian (written in 1985.) The latter deals with the various nationalities inside the USSR, including their conditions both before and after the revolution. The former obviously analyzes the position of women in Soviet society, and apparently contains a chapter comparing them with their Chinese counterparts (and concludes that the USSR > China on this subject.)
