It would all depend on the physical and mental progress that took place. If physical aging were to happen, then I would most definetely not want to live forever. Also it would depend on whether or not everyone had the chance to live forever.
The only thing that would draw me to want this to happen, would be my curiousity on how history will unfold. I am very curious as to what will happen as time goes on. This would be the only thing I would care to live forever for. So yes I would think that would be a fascinating thing, however would I if I could? Only if I would have the possibility of death if I pleased somewhere down the line. As long as it wasn't complete immortality I just might do it.

Assuming that I would be in reasonably good health, at this point I would not mind living forever. I feel like there is so much to be seen and done... and it is not like I believe in some afterlife that I am anxious to get on to...

It is an interesting question especially in relation to some existensialist thought (Camus' question becoming irrelevent lets say if you were immortal).
Would life be absurd if you could live forever? I am not sure I could hack living forever to be honest.

i would not live 4 ever but i wouldent mind a longer life span if i wouldnt get all old and decreped thats only if there was a anarchist way of life instiled in all people because i dont want to put up w/ all the materialism

Yes.
Obviously I would prefer if physical aging were to not occur, but I could hack it either way.

Depends on the physical y mental status I would have.. If I could be healthy, moving and everything and not forgetting everything I think I would consider a eternal life here, because there is so much I would like to do to better the standard for the people who has nothing, the oppressed people and such. I wouldnt mind waiting out mr bush and other scum to slap them when they were forgotten and rotten..
On the other hand I dont know if I could cope seeing all my loved ones dying from me if I was the only one to be with eternal life.
All in all its a very difficult but yet amusing thought. Kind of like the elves in LOTR.. :D

No!!
Never!!
I feel I would end up travelling the realms of time and space, insulting everyone in the UNIVERSE - in alphabetical order!!! (This "witticism" will be lost on those who, for some reason, haven't read 'A Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy')
Living for 500 years I could stand. 1000 perhaps. But after that I would have exhausted the possibilities for "enjoyment" or "fulfillment" here on Earth. And I would gladly turn my soul over to God for judgement!!

The question is if YOU could live forever, would you? Well, my first point is that living forever while everyone around you, including those most preciuous to you die would be unbelievably painful. I would also imagine life would become quite boring (even more than it already is), as you have so much time, and nothing would truly be fulfilling, as you wouldn't be able to find anything that could possibly take up that much time.
Living forever actually takes away your freedom. Sure you could argue it gives you the freedom to live forever, but it takes away the freedom to die, whether naturally, or by other means.
No doubt, if your 'ability' was found out, you would also become a guinea pig of corporate scientists.
However, I cannot deny there would be some desire on my part to be immortal in the sense of power. I would feel that I am beyond life, perhaps an avatar.
I would say no, but my last point has now confused me. Im too selfish I guess...

do you mean that rhetorically? like live forever through your offspring or in literature? or like in history?
or like the undead, walking zombies or as a cmputer algoryhtm that is a synthesized, r2d2 version of yourself?
or do you mean like live forever in the afterlife? or do you mean like in our physical bodies?
what in the name of fuck do you mean?

Yeah...all that.
And what do you mean "forever"?
In 150 billion years or so there won't be any stars still burning...the universe will be cold and dark and dead.
That doesn't sound like much fun to me.
Realistically, presuming one could maintain one's physical and mental vitality at age 25-35 for several thousand years, I could go for that.
I suspect, though, that once you really had "seen & done everything"...you might well be ready for "the big sleep".

Hey 'genius' (hazard)
He means would you physically live forever. As in your body, conscience, etc. would be physically alive for the rest of time. Not in a history book. What the hell would you have thought he meant? Honestly Mr. self-proclaimed 'genius', how and why would you interperet this any different than a physical life?

i ment live like to be alive, never die... unless you kill yourself. sth like elfs in tolkien.
i can say i'm sure bout this - i wouldn't like it. everything passes with time so i think the we should also. as TCOTR said, i'd maybe like to live longer, but not forever.

Yes Immortality, that would be far out! I would build a giant throne by the fountain of youth :)
However, I think that there would have to be an aquillies heal or krypton out there somewhere :D
As long as I had a bathing bueaty to join me, it would be alright! :P
Anyway, I will live forever anyway, at least my soul will!

You can be immortal like say the name of Che or Nietzsche, it was the aim of the romantic poets.
From a post modernist perspective Nietzsche lives, in fact he sacrificed his real life for a kind of afterlife, his name.
A sacrifice of this life for your immortal name.

This is possibly the most important question the humanity has.
If the reply is no, then all the science, health, technology, education and other things will be pointless, although some of those practices will be useful to have a good time while we are alive, and live as much as we can and in the better conditions.
If the reply is yes then health, science, technology, educations and such other things won't be that important unless they are there to make sure we live well forever, and at the same time things like reproduction will become almost irrelevant and people might get tired.
Of course all this depends on the situation when this happens: is this just satan telling me that he can make me live forever, or is it just a weird scientific situation where you become immortal? Is it only going to happen for me or will it happen to everyone else?
I'm not sure what would i do if i could live forever. I would like to live forever but i would prefer to be immortal excepting if i want to die.
Very interesting question

Living for a long time, 500 to 1000 years? sure.
Living FOREVER? Certainly Not!
I reckon any longer than a millenium and any intelligent being that thinks at the speed humans do
will become extremely bored or go insane.
We grow old because the cells that make up our vital organs stop being replaced as the old ones wear out.
I remember it has something to do with anti-oxidants, but I can't remeber the rest.
If cells could be constantly replaced for however long you want to live, it would mean immortality and long life for those who want it.

Just for the records. The cells have a longevity of 200 years if they are unused. Living more than that would be close to fantasy for the moment.

when i'd say i'd like to live longer - it was primary cause i'd like to see some things happening; e.g. i'd really like to be alive when there would be the first communist (let's say) state. (i know that in communism there should be no states) :hammer:

I plan on living forever. You would never get bored because things happen in the world faster than one can experience them. I mean, by the time one's watched every movie ever made, a whole bunch of new movies will have been made. The world is infinitely interesting because the samsara is constantly changing it. Also, there are certain sensations and experiences one would never tire of, like beauty, power, youth etc. As for the sensory pleasures, they would get worn out, but they can be rednewed by abstinence. "Penance willl charm back the luxury of a child's soul." So, if I were to live forever, I'd probably go through a cycle of debauchery and penance. It's not boring.
I'm surprised at the number of members here who would like to live forever, given the miserablist attitudes to be found here.
I have to agree with Woody Allen: "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work - I want to achieve immortality through not dying.
Living for a long time, 500 to 1000 years? sure.
It probably wouldn't seem like a long time. I think that if everyone lived that long, we would still be saying 'life is short', because anything seems tiny compared to infinity.
We grow old because the cells that make up our vital organs stop being replaced as the old ones wear out.
I remember it has something to do with anti-oxidants, but I can't remeber the rest.
It's to do with telomarase. Y'know the shape of DNA molecule - two intertwining helices (spirals) with crossbars running between them (i.e. genes). And at each end there is a band of a protein called telomarase, linking the two helices. When a cell splits, a piece of the telomarase is given to the new cell, so after it duplicates itself a certain number of times (depending on the type of cell), it has no more telomarase left and so can't reproduce - that's what causes aging. New telomarase isn't ordinarily produced because the gene which would produce it is 'off'. In cancer cells however, the gene is 'on', so cancer cells can reproduce like mad. So if we could turn the telomarase-producing gene 'on' without causing cancer, we could stop aging.
Personally, however, I think getting turned into a vampire is the best way to go for the moment.
Anyhow, the soul willl live forever, at least.
