I saw the Nirvana thread and wanted to make a similar poll regarding a band I liked.
I thought about a few, like the Beatles, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, etc. But all were fairly easy to detect the genius of the bunch.
Then I though of Pink Floyd.
In the question I didn't write exactly what aspect of these musicians to judge, so I simply wrote "greatest". Not necessarily most talented, most influential, most important to the group, but who you think is the best member.
I even added what each musician does, fo those of you who don't know.
And also for those of you who don't know, Syd got fucked up on drugs and David has been lead since. That's why there are 2 lead guitarists.

David Gilmour. He's one of my favourite guitar players.

dave Gilmour hands down, not only is he the best vocalist of the band after the departure of Syd, but he is arguably one of the greatest guitarists to have graced the world.
Edit: Didn't syd have a mental collapse, rather than get fucked up on drugs?

The founding member of the band that so many today admire and respect, today lives in seclusion and in ill health....a once brilliant mind destroyed by drugs. Syd is a legacy and a lesson for all.
In the exact word of some Pink Floyd website.
Yeah, i agree on Gilmour.
He's what keeps the band going these days.

The Nirvana thread was more outrageous, because none of the members of Nirvana is a genius( maybe not the members of Pink Floyd either, but they're closer)

Fuck it, no way will the nirvana thread beat this one...although I do enjoy them, credit where it is due and pink flloyd is that place.
Gilmour...I am biased bcause I am heavily into guitar. I would therefore say he was the greatest member, and yes Enigma I agree with you on lyrics as well. However I do love Water's era PF, he had a lot of the visions that made the band what they became. DSOTM was where he found his footing, but albums after that were spectacular. Perhaps PF FANS may not like The Wall and such as much as Medal (one of my faves ;)) but that does define the band to some extenet to the majority of people. Therefore I would probably credit him as the most "genius memeber". The thread ask on question, the poll another I voted Gilmour but Waters..well..

Waters was a good lyricist.
And he's been a member since the very begining, as opposed to Gilmour who joined only to replace Syd.
The Waters-era is undeniably the best, however.
DSOTM, Animals, WYWH, and the Wall are the very best albums they ever released.
Some of the pre-DSOTM was good too.
More psychadelic and acidic, perhaps.
I don't know if they would have continued pumping out great albums even if Waters had stayed.
Not to say that they didn't make a few.
Gilmour is truly one of the greatest guitarists ever, and what a friendly fellow he seems to be. :)
