Stopping the rapes at Karnes
We won't stop until women stop being abused and raped at Karnes.
Can you take just a minute to call the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Civil Rights and demand justice?

Dear Chris,
For far too long immigrant women held in detention at Karnes County Residential Center have faced brutal rape every night without the support of anyone on the outside. Thanks to multiple legal organizations and over 40,000 UltraViolet members who signed the petition calling for an investigation, that has now changed.
But a media spotlight on the disturbing abuse at Karnes is just the beginning. The Department of Homeland Security has not taken action to start an investigation yet--and probably hopes that once the news stories die down, the department can turn a blind eye to what is happening inside this private detention center. We can't let that happen--the life and dignity of hundreds of women depends on it. Can you show DHS we're serious by calling the Department of Civil Rights and demanding an investigation into the abuse at Karnes?
Here's the number: 202-401-1474.
After you call, click here (http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fact.weareultraviolet.org%2Fcall %2FKarnes_calls%2F%3Ft%3D3%26akid%3D1390.852651.7d tMse&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEgCYMnwanoD7CG4X4_eleK8ZW1OQ) to let us know how it went, so we can track our progress together.
It's always best to speak in your own words, but here are some bullet points that can guide you:
DHS needs to investigate and take action at Karnes because:
* The number of women reporting the same stories of rape and sexual abuse to their attorneys is alarming and proves the problem is real and needs to be addressed immediately.1
* Male guards at Karnes County Residential Center have open access to women detainees' cells at any time of the day or night, and women are told they will receive assistance with their cases or money in exchange for sexual favors.2
* Women are often groped and assaulted in front of other detainees, including children.3
* Thousands of UltraViolet members, Human Rights First, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and other organizations and law firms are calling for an investigation--will DHS respond or turn a blind eye to horrific abuse?4
Will you make the call now?
Thanks for speaking out.
