Can Revleft recommend me a book or books on the history of the 3rd and 4th Internationals? The intro to Prison Notebooks has me wanting more details.

Trot Pierre Broué has a book on the 3rd International.

And I'm not sure 4th international has any history whatsoever. Like, you could read about the gazillion splits and all...

John Riddell has written quite a bit on the Comintern, so I suggest you begin with his works. I'd recommend the following, though they are all somewhat lengthy:

"Toward the United Front: Proceedings of the Fourth Congress of the Communist International, 1922," by John Riddell.

"Lenin's Struggle for a Revolutionary International: Documents: 1907-1916: The Preparatory Years," by John Riddell.

"Founding the Communist International, Proceedings and Documents of the First Congress, March 1919," by John Riddell.

"The German Revolution and the Debate on Soviet Power: Documents, 1918-1919; Preparing the Founding Congress," by John Riddell.

"Workers of the World and Oppressed Peoples,Unite! Proceedings and Documents of the Second Congress of the Communist International, 1920 (Volumes 1 and 2)" by John Riddell.

"To See the Dawn: Baku, 1920-First Congress of the Peoples of the East (Communist International in Lenin's Time)."

"The First Five Years of the Communist International, Volumes 1 and 2" by Leon Trotsky.

Some works dealing with the 4th international and related topics would be:

The Death Agony of Capitalism and the Tasks of the Fourth International -Trotsky. Also known as the transitional program, it was a founding document of the 4th.

In Defense of Marxism - Trotsky. A classic of Marxist literature, it is a collection of articles and letters written by Trotsky addressing the debates taking place in the American SWP leading up to WWII.

Socialism on Trial - Cannon. The court room testimony of Cannon, when leading members of the American SWP and the Teamsters union were charged with plotting the violent overthrow of the U.S. government.

History of American Trotskyism - Cannon. Based on 12 speeches given by Cannon, which detail his expulsion from the Communist Party USA, as well as the early efforts to develop the Trotskyist movement in the U.S.
