People,
We are right up on October. Everyday there's another story about someone being murdered by the police. These are accompanied by report after report of people in prison being subjected to brutality that amounts to torture. We must take up the spirit of the youth of Ferguson and say NO MORE to these horrors.
We must begin this by gathering and reading the Pledge of Resistance on October 1, and we must act on that pledge thruout the month. Thru our activities we must show to one and all that there are thousands of people who are determined to end these horrors, and we must continue to act to do that beyond October.
There are a few things I think we need to highlight as we go about putting up a big STOP SIGN to mass incarceration and police terror.
1. Let everyone know about Alice Walker's poem Gather and Chuck D's audio Pledge to Resist in October by spreading the links to them everywhere.
2. Drive as many people as possible to the web site: stopmassincarceration.net, so they can find out about October and see what's being done in cities across the country.
3. Spread the link to our Indiegogo crowd funding page and raise money to make our efforts in October as powerful as possible in other ways. Volunteers are needed to call those who have endorsed the call and ask them to support October in additional ways, especially by giving money
4. Continue to send your plans for October into [email protected]
5. Take pictures, record videos and do reports on everything you do and send them in to [email protected]
Also we are assembling a delegation of people to Ferguson in response to the Call for Ferguson Weekend, October 10-13. If you can go down to Ferguson for this weekend, or part of the weekend, let us know and start raising money to help defray the cost of the delegation. If you need financial assistance to get to Ferguson, let us know. If you aren't able to go to Ferguson October 10-13, raise money to make it possible for the delegation to go down and stand with the people in Ferguson AND spread the message of the October Month of Resistance.
And finally, we are assembling a beginning speakers bureau that the media can contact for interviews. The people on it are: Iris Baez, Carl Dix, Collette Flanagan, Nicholas Heyward Sr., Rev. Jerome McCorry, Efia Nwangaza and Juanita Young. This info will go up on the web site very soon, and it will include brief bios and ways to contact these speakers.
Let's do all we can to mobilize the kind of resistance that can make October the beginning of the end for mass incarceration.
Carl Dix

Suggestions for doing the Pledge of Resistance on Oct 1st
This is the first action of the Month of Resistance. We aim to STOP mass incarceration, police terror, repression and the criminalization of a generation! Lets do this pledge dramatic, lets do it loud, lets do it proud. With this first action, we are calling forth many more people to get involved throughout the month.
Get as many people together as you can, whether that is 50-100 in front of city hall in a large city with an active chapter of Stop Mass Incarceration or in front of the city police station with five of you who just recently met and aim to gather more for the month. Arrange everyone so the camera can get everyone in the picture, whether that is TV cameras or your cell phone camera.
Print large versions of the Pledge of Resistance and the Stop Sign. Have people hold those. The PDFs to print those are on the website. Be sure to have on bottom or top or both, the website stopmassincarceration.net. Have that as large as needed to be read in photos or TV footage. We want everyone who sees this to go to the website to find the ways they can get involved in the Month of Resistance.
Have one person (not everyone) read the part on the left side of the website Pledge page What kind of society do you want to live in? Whos your most dramatic reader? Have them read it.
Then have one person (may be same person who read the What kind of society do you want to live in? or another person) lead the group in reading the Pledge together beginning with WE PLEDGE 'NO MORE'! Read slowly enough and with appropriate pauses to be heard clearly. Remember we are speaking to all who will hear and see this.
Have a simple press packet to give press. It can consist of the press release and the Alice Walker poem Gather for Carl Dix and Cornel West. You can include in your press release local demands.
Designate someone to talk further with the press. If there is no press, someone interview someone with a cell phone camera. You can tell local demands, the next action you want to announce and tell everyone to come to.
Take still photos and video. Send to [email protected] Get this sent by the end of the day or right away if possible. These first actions should be up on the website immediately to show people the Month of Resistance has begun with a powerful demonstration of determination and a demand to all of society that mass incarceration, police terror, repression and the criminalization must STOP!
Be prepared to talk to people who came to do the reading or others who see you do it to give them ways right there on the spot to get involved in the Month of Resistancebe on the social media team, the press team, the outreach team. Get everyones contact info to put on the elist (but give them ways to get involved right there, not well get back to you.). Have materials there to give to people so they can leave there on a mission to get out to others.
Talk to people about going to Ferguson on the SMIN delegation. Or if they cant go, donate frequent flier miles or money to send others.
Ask people for donations right on the spot and then ask them to donate more later. Have collection buckets so people will see you need and want money. No good ideas we have should be held back by lack of money.
