American Dad has actually managed to become its own animal over the years, once Seth McFarlane allowed the production team more free reign over the material.
That said, I still watch Family Guy whenever its on. Stewie is that show's one saving grace. He never, ever gets old. May he never age past toddler-hood.

I'm not mad, it was just a poor attempt at trolling. Idc if people watch shows with sexist, racist etc jokes, who am I to police that kind of thing. I probably watch a lot of films and series with that kind of content too, and can enjoy them in spite of that. I just don't think Family Guy and American Dad are good shows, but I think I got that message accross. I'll go do something useful instead.

Okay, I admit it, I've been watching an episode of Family Guy each evening while eating dinner because I haven't felt like sitting through more "1 hour dramas". I'm so ashamed!
Seriously, I know nobody's gonna give a shit and I'm going to be called uptight, or whatever else, but re-watching a couple of the early episodes made it clear just how fucking transphobic, sexist, racist and otherwise bigoted/stupid some of the humor is.
That doesn't mean both shows don't have their moments, though. I could name a couple of choice episodes.
Between the two I guess I'd go with Family Guy, though, just because Roger is so fucking annoying, and because Family Guy came first so I was more forgiving about it seeming like a dumbed-down "edgy" Simpsons knockoff.

You people do realize that Seth MacFarlane is an advocate for LGBT rights, right? He's also criticized racist pieces of shit as well. Jokes are jokes, get a fucking grip. If you don't like it, don't watch it. I mean, fuck him, he's a liberal. But I'd rather deal with a liberal atheist like him, before a lot of the other people in the bourgeois media.
I like Family Guy, American Dad is alright, and I didn't mind The Cleveland Show either. I also like Seth MacFarlane's work on Johnny Bravo, and the other cartoons that he's worked on too. The same goes with his work on the new Cosmos show, and him being the advocate to those assholes at Fox, to even get it made in the first place.

Seth MacFarlane may be this or that, but in the end he's a heterosexual white man who has made a fortune making fun of women, homosexuals, trans people etc. Do you really think the majority of his audience comes away from his shows realizing how silly it is to attack those groups, or do you think it's more likely that he's just reinforced their existing bigoted notions?
I'm not trying to be the fun police, but comedy is still political even if we don't want it to be.

To be fucking honest, I think that you'd be surprised. I personally think that a good lot of the audience realizes that it's only silly bullshit. That they're making fun of how stupid it is, and that's what they're laughing at, alongside the joke. But then again, maybe I'm just being an optimist, and merely going on the intent of such shows. It takes a lot in comedy to offend me. There's difference between making fun of prejudices and chauvinism, and actually being prejudice and chauvinistic. I'm of the mindset that it's good to make fun of how stupid things are. What's even more funny, is that I'm more libertarian on this damn subject, than the fucking anarchists on this site. Which was displayed the last time this sorta topic came up.

I'm not quite sure, but what about South Park? They have this shit all the time. Look at Cartman, he's the biggest douchebag ever (still love him to pieces ). Know that episode when he asked Kyle for his Jew gold and Kyle REALLY had it? Isn't this actually "antisemitic"? And Kyle's mother has a "Jew nose", and many, many more of this stuff. But at the same time, it's fucking hilarious, I really laugh my ass off about all of these Jew jokes, but also about the other ones. I guess part of that is because Cartman is not presented as some adorable character, but as the biggest psychopath. So why would such jokes be okay, but those from FG/AD not?

It's all about intent as well. Those assholes at South Park are a mixed bag really. They're incredibly reactionary on some things, but seem almost progressive on other things. It's a case by case basis. But from what I've read, Matt Stone and Trey Parker are libertarians though. While Matt Stone is ethnically Jewish. (Which honestly excuses the Jew jokes. Like how Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks are "self-hating" Jews, and have also made a whole lotta Jewish jokes in their time.) Which would explain it. The same goes with Penn and Teller too. They're libertarian atheists, and while libertarian skepticism is pseudoskepticism. They make some excellent points socially, and against pseusoscience. Again, it all depends on the context and the situation.
That being said, South Park is funny, and I watch it. I don't feel bad either. It's just a TV show, for fucks sake.

I think you're being overly optimistic. When the audience is laughing at the deaf character for instance, its not because they've finally realized how unfair and ridiculous it is to lampoon disabled people, they're laughing at it because Seth Macfarlane thought it was be funny for a deaf man to be the butt of a joke, and apparently it is. South Park falls in the same category as these two shows, although I admit I haven't watched much of it. However the people I interact with who do watch it are not people I would rate very highly regarding social issues, or people I'm excited to interact with in the first place.
In what way are your opinions a demonstration of libertarianism on your part? It looks like you're getting defensive about something you like, that's a pretty universal phenomenon separate from politics. Did I express a desire to censor these shows in one of my posts without realizing it?

With the greased up deaf guy. I would say that they're laughing at the premise of trying to catch a greased up deaf guy. Which in itself, is totally ridiculous. But then again, that's how I take it.
Who's getting defensive? Cause I'm certainly not. I'm annoyed with what seems like oversensitivity on this site, more than anything. Honestly, the way it comes off by people here, is that they'd have it censored, if they'd get their way. At least that's like how it seems to me. So my bad, for the assumption. The internet doesn't really translate the tone all that well. :p

I haven't seen it, but I wanna start watching it. Cause I like Daniel Tosh and Tom Kenny. Daniel Tosh is hilarious, and he's also another advocate for LGBT rights. I think both Family Guy and American Dad have had some funny moments but I also find myself feeling pretty uncomfortable with some of the jokes. I don't think we can separate comedy from the political context; "comedy" that makes oppressed or marginalised people the butt of the joke perpetuates the dehumanisation of those people. Call me humourless, but I don't find that kind of shit funny.
M-L-C-F

Oh, and I'm not immune to being offended by jokes either. Any jokes that are anti-communist/anti-socialist, or against rational thought/atheism really piss me off. But I either just mute it, change the channel, or I just don't watch that specific episode ever. I can easily ignore things, let it go, and still not have it bother me. Otherwise, I'd go nuts. I laugh with people, not at them.

In capitalist society, minority groups are going to fare badly in media no matter what, I think. My problem with these shows is that (1) they are genuinely, drearily, soul-crushingly unfunny, and (2) the "look at us we can laugh at gay people we're so progressive and cool" liberals are drawn to these shows like... well, insert your favourite demeaning comparison here, and these people basically deserve a one-way trip to a Lagrange point somewhere in the Solar System.

They cancelled Chozen unfortunately. At the same time they also cancelled Legit. Which really pissed me off, cause I loved Legit, and Jim Jefferies is fucking hilarious.
As for The Simpsons, after season 9 it sucks. Though after season 7, it gets spotty at times. The main reason why I even watch The Simpsons now, is cause I play The Simpsons: Tapped Out, and it links the game to the new episodes. But that Simpsons-Family Guy crossover was alright, I think.

I like Sealab 2021, the original Sealab 2020 was boring as fuck. I miss old Adult Swim. The people who made Sealab 2021 made Frisky Dingo, and they make Archer. Frisky Dingo was fucking awesome. But what I really loved was Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. Until that piece of shit Stephen Colbert left, and ruined it. He also stopped doing voiceovers all together. So he doesn't voice Dr. Impossible on The Venture Bros. anymore either. Cause he's far too famous for that shit now.
Which also brings up him and his inevitable ruining of The Late Show, after David Letterman leaves. Then with Craig Ferguson being done after the end of the year, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers who are annoying, Arsenio Hall getting cancelled, and Chelsea Handler leaving Chelsea Lately. There will be no one good left at all, on late night. :(

Space Ghost Coast to Coast was on the air a long time. It started in 1994 (way before Adult Swim), and new episodes were being made up until 2008. The 80s had some great action cartoons to....and I'm not talking about He-Man or Thundercats. I'm talking things like Exosquad and Galaxy Rangers.
