The plan of the ruling so-called "People's Party" in Spain, which has ties to the previous fascist dictatorship (which it has yet to condemn), to illegalize abortion in almost all cases has been cancelled, and the minister who was responsible for it quit politics.
This victory would have been impossible without the constant efforts of men and women workers and students, who demonstrated several times and spread information, among other actions. As always, at the forefront of this effort were groups of the left.
However, abortion is still partly restricted, and the struggle to further unrestrict it has nowhere near the same amount of effort put in.
The far-right and religious organizations which had called for tactical support of the People's Party have already published statements withdrawing this support. One group said: "PP has been in power for 3 years, and there have been 300,000 abortions."
The Izquierda Unida ("United Left") coalition has released a statement in which they support the total unrestriction of abortion rights, as well as implementing politics which further the feminist struggle. So has its main member organization, the Communist Party of Spain.
The Podemos ("We Can") group has released a statement praising the victory of the struggle against the restriction of abortion rights, and had already previously called for a "decriminalization" of abortion and the implementation of "universal guaranteed access".
The Corriente Roja ("Red Current" or "Red Tendency") group (section of the International Workers' League - Fourth International) has called for the total exclusion of abortion from any criminal code, as well as the implementation of guaranteed access.
The Izquierda Anticapitalista ("Anticapitalist Left") group (section of the Unified Secretariat of the Fourth International) has as well called for the exclusion of abortion from the criminal code, as well as the guarantee of availability of abortion, along with other feminist demands.
The Socialismo Revolucionario ("Revolutionary Socialism") group (section of the Committee for a Workers' International) has not yet published a statement in their Web site, but had previously already published statements supporting the free and guaranteed access to abortion in all cases.
