View Full Version : Representin' the South....

Brandon's Impotent Rage

So I've been on this board for a little over a year now, and I realized I've never made this thread.

So, who else here is from the Southern U.S.? Living in the country? The backwoods? One of the big cities? Wut?

.....Also, isn't our buttery, deep-fried cuisine just awesome?!

But seriously, no, and never. However, if someone put a gun to my head, and said that I gotta live in the American south. It would be the ATL or New Orleans. (Miami would be tolerable if it wasn't for the gusanos, and their Venezuelan allies. It's a cesspool, and Little Havana should be sunk into the ocean. But Miami don't count to some people.) Beyond that, and outside the city? Fuck that shit. I don't trust the rural areas up here in the north. Let alone down south. Maybe I'd visit, but I'd never live there. I do like soul food and BBQ though. So I'd be digging the food at least. :p

Lol. I've only met one Cuban, and he didn't say how awesome it is here so he seemed okay.
Most South Americans I meet here on the West Coast seem to be reactionary and upper-class in their countries, since flying is the best and most common way out. The only exception I find is Peruvians, a lot of them come from poor backgrounds and suffered Fujimori, so they're not too US friendly. The friendliest towards socialism are always the Central Americans (mostly Salvadorans and Guatemalans here). They come from poverty and go through hell to get here, many lived through a civil war where they supported the guerrillas. Unfortunately, they are harassed in Mexico because of that and insulted here. I don't get why the Mexicans like to pick on them, even though we get along quite well. I've always looked at them like brothers and sisters, and I love their accents.

Most of my Latino co-workers at my last job, seemed sympathetic to leftist causes. The one that wasn't, was an idiot, and was a white Peruvian. But he's white, and had a supervisor position at his last job. So I wasn't surprised in the least. (Though he was impressed that I knew about Cinochet.) The Chilean that I worked with, lived through the hell of Pinochet, and he was a supporter of Allende. Then the Guatemalan that I worked with, was impressed that I knew about his country, and the bullshit that happened there. While the Mexican that I worked with, was also sympathetic, and was supportive of Cuba. Because of Cuba helping working class Mexicans. They all knew that I'm a Marxista-Leninista, and a Chavista. The cool ones didn't like the gusanos either.

Fuck, even the Russians that I worked with, hated the American and western stupidity about Russia and the Soviet Union. :)

As a Brit, I don't really understand the dynamics, but I also took the impression that "the South" was a bit of a touchy subject in the States. So as a total observer, the idea of "representing the South" to me has sinister overtones.

Is that really unfair and just something I've made up in my head?

The way it's meant in this topic isn't bad. If it was white/southern/American nationalism. Then it would be bad. It's merely about people on here, from the American south, and their opinions of it there. Other people are free to chime in, as I did. I do understand where you're coming from though. As it could be mistaken as something bad, without proper context at first glance.

I'm not from the South but I did live in Texas for about a year and a half, in Austin.

Not a bad city, all things considered. I liked the people there for the most part.

My brother was just passing through Austin with his girlfriend, and apparently some random dude at a party (who had just done a bunch of blow) offered them both $100 to stay an extra night because he liked them so much. They took it. Sounds like a great place lol

It's idiomatic here for something more along the lines of "I'm associated with xyz" or "I'm from xyz" than confederate pride / WN / etc. But yeah southern pride and the stars and bars are associated with WN and stuff although a lot of people here are ignorant of some of this association and instead think it's just an "I'm from the south" thing to have a confederate flag sticker on the back window of their car, then get confused when I don't want one anywhere near me.

You've got like a 50% chance of getting away with saying that in Atlanta. It's preferable to say ATLien because Outkast, but even then not all the time. Just don't say Hotlanta, them's fightin' words. For real. Er, well, you'll probably just be avoided rather than fought.

New Orleans is cool. But it's also really really really segregated. Really segregated even by southern standards. And some other smallish south Louisiana towns, holy shit. A few years ago I got pulled over by fucking MPs in New Orleans on Chef Hwy which was scary as shit. Also wear lose shirts and shorts and maybe flip flops or you'll hate life. And go eat at Deanie's. Then rent a sports car if you don't own one and have fun on what's basically the American autobahn, or I-10 between Kenner and Baton Rouge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_10_in_Louisiana#mediaviewer/File:The_I-10,_running_west_of_New_Orleans.jpg). Just don't get into an accident or you'll probably flip over the guard rail into the swamp and then you will be eaten. RIP M-L-C-F, who tasted like chicken, according to an alligator.

Hotlanta is just stupid to say. I wish Freaknik was still around. That was the shit back in the day, I've heard. I'd totally go to that, if it still was around, and I was there.

I'd probably end up living in a black or Latino neighbourhood in New Orleans anyways. Either that, or an LGBT area. I'm white, but I'd rather not deal with a lot of the white people down south.

I've only been to the South twice in my life (Charlotte both times), and I had a great time! Everyone was so much friendlier than I'm used to in the midwest/west coast, and I went to the best dance party at the Scorpio.

I'm from New England, but I've been in Atlanta area for about 5 years now and in Georgia for about 15. I loved living in Savannah, but I don't think I could would ever like to live there again, though I still like to visit. Before Savannah, I lived in the shitty one stoplight rural town "Ludowici". Quite possibly the worst place I've lived. Atlanta is pretty cool though. I've lived just north of the city the whole time, but I'll happily be moving "ITP" within the next few months.

Also, I think I might love North Carolina.

Jersey is already too hot and humid for me. I'd probably get malaria and die of dysentery if I ever lived in the South.
