University students in Angrens, Uzbekistan, load busses for the annual cotton harvest.

Dear Chris,

Today, teachers and students in Uzbekistan, like the ones you see here, are being sent to fields to pick cotton rather than heading to classrooms. They are among the millions of citizens the Uzbek Government will forcibly mobilize into cotton fields between now and the end of the harvest season in November.

The Government, as the sole executor and beneficiary of this forced-labor system, can unilaterally end it. Join us in calling for them to do so! (http://afl.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=i9TEmUcHGTcl7UCMd0uQYGGvEzmBlG4%2B)

Cotton is referred to as “the national wealth” of Uzbekistan, but the reality is cotton profits disappear into a fund controlled by a few political elite. Farmers are forced to grow quotas of cotton, buy the inputs from state-run monopolies and sell their crop back to the state at prices well below its market value. Farmers are lucky to break even in this rigged system, and have no capacity to hire workers to help harvest, so the State coerces Uzbek citizens to pick cotton with threats including expulsion from school, losing a job and even violence.

In advance of October 1 -- Teacher’s Day in Uzbekistan -- we are sending a message to the Uzbek Government that this must end. On Tuesday, Sept. 30, we'll participate in demonstrations at Uzbek embassies around the world, as well as the Ministry of Education in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent. We will deliver a set of demands to the Uzbek Government that would bring this egregious practice to an end.

Please add your voice to this important effort TODAY! (http://afl.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=zCAWgq50gCY8MZ%2FxVvUKHGGvEzmBlG4%2B)
