What would have happened if the Soviet Union were still around? If the United States never would have been involved in Afghanistan? The Red Army would have crushed the Mujahideen, meaning that the Taliban could never have formed. Would it be possible that 9/11 never would have happened?
If they won in Afghanistan, this could lead to several alternatives-Iran and other Middle East countries possessed by the Soviet Union? Given the changing social atmosphere, would the control, especially by the KGB, loosen?

Pretty much, could it be possible under different circumstances for the USSR to still exist today, and what would it be like?

I don't think they could have "won" the war. The USSR pissed off too many people. I mean one of the first things they did was assassinate the President! The ruling party of Afghanistan renounce Marxism later on. I think Afghanistan would've just been better off if everyone would've just left them alone.

Maybe Afghanistan would be more progressive, maybe it'd be the same, just with Soviet troops instead of NATO. Al-Qaeda might still be more focused on the SU. Who knows. It's hard to see into alternate universes.

By the time the SU fell, it was basically socialist in name only.Khrushchev said that "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" doesn't work. IIRC Brezhnev said something to the effect that he doesn't believe in Marxism(not sure about this one, but I think he might of said it). Gorbachev said he wanted the SU to be "like Sweden". If the SU had survived, they'd probably be like China, a powerful outright capitalist country in red colors(and no substance), instead of basically a third world country.

However, it's too bad it fell before the internet really took off. Moscow's paid posters and RT news could've been fucking hilarious(more than they are now)!
