The last few threads about MTW have promoted my thought. Thinking about the so-called "first-second, third, fourth, and fifth" worlds has gotten me thinking more on the concept in general. Before I go any further, however, I was interested in who the people/ institutions were who created and promoted the concept of these national socioeconomic divisions. So just the history of how it came to play such predominance in discourse. Links or mentioning of journal articles, books, and the like would be most appreciative, as well as general discussion regarding. Thanks.

The term itself was first introduced in the late 1940s by the United Nations.
