Friday, Sept. 12 marks 16 years since Gerardo, Antonio, Ramón, Fernando, and René were arrested in Miami and thrown into solitary confinement. 16 years since they began the wait for their unfair trial held in the city of Miami, and even more unfair by virtue of secret government payments to journalists writing articles to inflame passions against Cuba and the Five. René and Fernando are back in Cuba now, but only because they finished serving their unjust sentences, not out of any sense of compassion or justice on the part of Barack Obama or his predecessors. It is up to us to intensify the pressure to free Gerardo, Ramón and Antonio.

Events have been scheduled in numerous cities in the U.S. and around the world. Check our calendar (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001WSYvgeuqJM_wA4duv0vQEmmfbcEWVH-Xd646_zmO1zesU29eYouXN-nlg_FmPvT-n3W8kYVr261Bva4P0oFT1Rc4wr7LkrZIxACF68U4dIiIOVu0yf vxjlq2NC7NT6ZVTjJ53Xbvr_KxsqMLED-XtTJeSotrCXDrZNTJVea1bjwj2I3j2XE0XcltwS27kVZz&c=81FbAZwpf-rG1IM95veNk9bMzIMblWrqIwRzT6PDmDgJzwogIVhptA==&ch=38hSImWFuzKjJNF_QttplfbZ0uZdFVttbnZxXZYIFcvCPLK XLbwLKQ==) for the latest updates. As of now we know of the following events in the U.S. and Canada (you'll find full details in the calendar (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001WSYvgeuqJM_wA4duv0vQEmmfbcEWVH-Xd646_zmO1zesU29eYouXN-nlg_FmPvT-n3W8kYVr261Bva4P0oFT1Rc4wr7LkrZIxACF68U4dIiIOVu0yf vxjlq2NC7NT6ZVTjJ53Xbvr_KxsqMLED-XtTJeSotrCXDrZNTJVea1bjwj2I3j2XE0XcltwS27kVZz&c=81FbAZwpf-rG1IM95veNk9bMzIMblWrqIwRzT6PDmDgJzwogIVhptA==&ch=38hSImWFuzKjJNF_QttplfbZ0uZdFVttbnZxXZYIFcvCPLK XLbwLKQ==)):

In New York, NY, supporters of the Five will hold a picket at the Federal Building on Friday. Other events for the Five are scheduled in New York for the weeks following weeks, including a film showing and a letter-writing evening.

In San Francisco, CA, a late-afternoon street rally in the Mission district on Friday will be followed by a program featuring world-renowned Cuban poet, essayist, critic, editor and cultural worker Nancy Morejón. Morejón will read her poetry about the Cuban Five as well as poetry of Cuban Five hero Antonio Guerrero, with other speakers.

In Washington, DC a series of events are scheduled for Thursday-Saturday - an Evening in Solidarity with the Five, a picket of the White House on Friday, a cultural event, and a Saturday program which features the unveiling of a new showing of artwork by Antonio Guerrero.

North of the border in Vancouver (BC), an all-day conference on the Cuban Five will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13. That conference follows a week after the 106th monthly picket action for the Five in Vancouver.

In Miami, the Alianza Martiana will have a car caravan on Sept. 6 through the city to demand that the right-wing Miami terrorists be prosecuted and that Gerardo, Ramón and Antonio be freed immediately. Then they will participate in an important colloquium on the Cuban Five in Havana on Sept. 11 and 12.

Attend an event if you possibly can, encourage your friends to do so, and/or schedule an event yourself. Send us your information to: [email protected] We need to do everything we can to Free All the Cuban Five!

I know that case form Cuban and Venezuelan propaganda. And I try to look at it with critical eye.

Firstly, it would be very naive to think that US government will allow to operate Cuban agents on their territory in any reason. As well Russia won't allow to operate American British, Danish (etc.) agents on their territory. It's only possible when the state don't know it. If agents are exposed, then a deportation is the most delicate penalty.

And the five Cuban agents were exposed. And making heros of them is just propaganda. Looking at the case with critical eye, the one undemocratic and totalitarian government have sent the agents to the territory of another undemocratic and totalitarian government and the second one decided to imprison them... And why someone is to be a hero due to that?

@tuwix: I don't have a stance on this issue, but all you're saying is that they should've expected it, which isn't really an argument against their release.

It's ludicrous that you're describing the countries of the U.S. and Cuba in parallel terms -- even a *glance* at their respective histories, and then also the history of their interactions, shows that they're hardly comparable. You can start with their sizes, both by population, by land mass, and also geopolitically....

Looking at the case with critical eye, the one undemocratic and totalitarian government have sent the agents to the territory of another undemocratic and totalitarian government and the second one decided to imprison them...One "undemocratic and totalitarian" government couldn't overthrow the undemocratic totalitarian government even if they wanted to. One "undemocratic and totalitarian" government wouldn't be as "undemocratic and totalitarian" if the imperialist didn't have an economic blockade and threaten to destroy them. However, the totalitarian dictatorship(USA) would love nothing more than to make Cuba a neo-colony like Honduras.
And why someone is to be a hero due to that?"Anti-imperialism, bro/sis"

Because it's irrelevant to me whether will they be released or not. I describe only how does it look like. And it looks like a propaganda a one (state) capitalist country make heros of their agents caught in another capitalist country...

I agree with the sentiment in your original post ckaihatsu. The Cuban Five do deserve our support and solidarity. For all its faults Cuba is still a socialist country, unlike the capitalist US of A.

However it has not escaped my attention that all of the most moribund revisionist bureaucratic and anti-Marxist communists are the ones who go on and on and on about the Cuban Five, but never support other equally valid struggles in the global class war. There are some communist newspapers which only ever seem to support the Cuban Five, and never mention hard struggles in places like the Philippines, India, Turkey, and just recently Ukraine. Let us love and support all comrades.

I never knew who the 'Cuba Five' were before. I'd vaguely heard about it as a thing on the US left, but didn't know any details.

They were spies for a capitalist state.

The release of the Cuban 5 and the shift in U.S.-Cuba relations

By PSL Statement

Dec 17, 2014

The Party for Socialism and Liberation joins with the Cuban people and people throughout the world in expressing our jubilation over the release of the last three remaining members of the Cuban Five.

The Cuban Five have been imprisoned for 16 years. They are revolutionaries who remained steadfast in U.S. prisons. At great sacrifice, they exposed and derailed operations of CIA-trained counterrevolutionary terrorists operating from within the territory of the United States.

Celebrate freedom for the Cuban Five!

By Fight Back! Editors

We celebrate the release of the Cuban Five - political prisoners held by the U.S. government for 16 years. Their freedom also marks a positive change in relations between the U.S. government and Cuba. Many anti-war and international solidarity activists who worked towards their release are raising their glasses to toast this victory!

The Cuban Five are heroes who came to the U.S. to stop terrorist attacks against their country. Their commitment to the Cuban people is unquestionable. Their sacrifice and that of other Cuban internationalists knows no bounds.

By secretly joining the most reactionary groups in Florida, the Cuban Five put their lives at risk in order to stop attacks on Cuba and its socialist system. They exposed CIA complicity in terrorist attacks on Cuba, while the U.S. government was claiming to fight terrorism.

Freedom for the Cuban Five and the plans to normalize relations with Cuba announced by President Obama are to be applauded. The angry response of reactionary die-hards like Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is worrisome. They seem to want another Bay of Pigs invasion, or more assassination attempts, or hotel and airplane bombings.

Anyone who has ever been to Cuba knows how much all Cubans hate the U.S. embargo and will be glad to see it go. However, President Obama can only loosen restrictions, not end the embargo. Congress needs to pass a law to do that. President Obama’s action will allow more business, loved ones remittances and travel. The large U.S. Interests Section building will become the U.S. Embassy. Cuba will no longer be on the U.S. state terrorism list. This meets many of wishes of the Cuban government and people.

The victory comes in the context of left, progressive and democratic movements growing stronger and gaining power in country after country. From Venezuela to Uruguay, Bolivia to El Salvador, most of the revolutionary movement in Latin America sees Cuba as a beacon for socialism.

The U.S. empire is losing its grip. U.S. imperialism is in decline. Meanwhile Wall Street wants to maintain its profit making, not to be further isolated. U.S. diplomats and big businesses know doors will open easier if they are positive towards Cuba.

As Colombian peace talks take place in Cuba, it is time now to deepen our solidarity. Like the Cuban Five, we hope to see Colombian revolutionary Ricardo Palmera set free from the Florence Supermax Prison in Colorado and sitting at the peace table in Cuba. For us, our task is to continue building the struggle here at home against war and oppression.

Victory for the Cuban Five! Free Ricardo Palmera!
