Well, as you all know GWB and the rest of the rich morons will soon be duking it out on the campaign trail. In Canada, the land of free health care, and maple syrup, we'll be having an election shortly after yours. Althouh our democratic process is as flawed as any, and our politicians are just as stupid(okay, maybe not as some), I though it would make a nice thread to see what you think of the different candidates, their platforms, etc...
Let the heads roll...

Canada hasn't had a serious federal election in a decade.
As for predictions....well.....
The Liberals will win (the liberals always win),
The New Conservative party will be OO,
The NDP will do better, the Block will do worse.
And we can all enjoy the thousand year reich of Paul Martin.
Yipee.

I think that our country should rally around the neuveu conservative liberal party, ruled by a prime minister that we are not prepared to trust, ie. having industrialist relations and business parters!
Furthormore, the people of canada should rally around this, thus, the educated looking for a future with heathcare, government funded education and social services, will have only one choice for a new left winged leader but that of the NDP!
Or place faith in the liberal party of Canada to have elected Paul Martin for his true liberal political agenda
and just vote: Liberal!
Its a choice all canadians will have to make, just don't be a impirialist sellout and vote for the new conservative conservative party, its fiscal shizzle dissizzal, ya dig?
Or vote the Green Party! :)
peace yall

When is the exact date of the elections? I beleive it will be in October or November? I went to here:
http://www.elections.ca/home.asp?textonly=false
Then I went to when is the election. But reading it only confused me further. I think that place is out of date a little. Infact, alot of the Canadian Government website is either out of date or it doesn't contain to full material.
Maybe I'll be able to vote this year.

Chretien was in power for just over 10 years. A week or so before stepping down was his anniversarry.
The election has to come no more than 4 years after the last general election, but can be called at anytime by the Govenor General at the request of the prime minister. As an unelected Prime Minister it is tradition for him to call an election within the first sitting of parliment, to gain approval. So an election is expected in spring, and excuse me my Mogwia cd is skipping!

So Pete, how long is your national campaign season, generally speaking? I've been curious about the Canadian version of parliamentary politics but am not really sure where to look. Any info or links you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

As I have made painfully clear in the past, I support the NDP, as they are really the only chance the Left has in Canada, as of right now.
The Canadian Conservative Party was formed, "stop splitting the vote," amongst right wingers. They fail to realize, the members of the CC, that right now, we have a Right Wing Prime Minister. So, the Right-Schism continues. and only one party really benifits from this:
The NDP.
There is no split between leftist voters in Canada. Last Election, the NDP's support grew. Their membership is reaching 100 000 people, and right now, Paul Martin is pushing away Left-leaning members of the Liberal Party away in DROVES (Shiela Copps, a mouthpeice I would like to see with the NDP, to get the recognition they deserve, being a major potential one).
Will Martin win? Most likely, but he're hopin for AT LEAST, a Minority Government;)

It is either 28 days or 34. One or the other. 4 weeks? That would be 28 days then.
www.electionscanada.ca should give you the site of our electorial office, but I could be wrong.
Basically we have 304 or 305 seats (after the reform is put through in a few weeks) and whichever party holds the most seats forms a government, and its leader becomes prime minister. We operate a first past the post system which is designed for two parties. The candidate with the most votes in a particular riding automatically wins, even if the margin is less than 100 or they have less than 50 (or even 30) percent of the vote. It is the one with the most who wins. This is troubling as the Liberals usually get more seats than they do votes (66% of the seats in ontario with 44 or so % of the vote) and the NDP less (the won more vote in the last ontario election but lost seats).
www.cbc.ca will have information if you search a bit. In the top corner type in 'elections' and it should give you a primer. They are good for that. Any story they cover they have a primer prepared.

The Conservative Party is going to flop. The Red Tories will flee to the Liberal party, and the the biggots of the alliance will have their run of the Conservative party.
The Liberals, of course, will win again. They'll probably campaing left, again, and then rule right, again. Paul Martin will move the Liberal party to the right, if thats possible.
The Bloc, well who cares about the bloc.
The NDP doesn't have a chance in hell. For all the hype it won'd do any better I'm sure.
The CPC isn't going to win, thts for sure.
The green party is a mix of Liberal ideology and eviromentalism ...... ick
So, rifles it is. Now if only I could by some bullets without waiting 9 months.

Pete: I apprecitate it man. I used to listen to As It Happens every day, but the radio in my car is on the fritz so I have to depend on the 'net for news. And yes, to placate your astonishement, the local NPR member station (here in Florida no less) carries broadcasts from the CBC. I've just not been able to listen in.

Forgive my outstanding ignorance, but what is bloc?
Rasta Sapian

c'est le bloc quebecois, a more or less nationalist party which resides in the Quebec, our french speaking province. Canada has had a separtist movement for decades now, inspired by quebecois separtists, who would like Quebec to separate from the rest of Canada and become an independant nation, we had a referendum a couple of years ago, the people of Quebec voted to stay apart of Canada by a mere 51%
this party has lost momentum over the last couple of years, with a change in leadership and neveau liberal leadership with strong focus on federalism!

I think the NDP is going to do very well in the next election, I know most of us are hoping for official opposition in order to keep the new Liberal regime in check. I'm really hoping the new Conservatives flop horribly also.

Well better Liberal than conservatives. It sounds to me like Canada has evolved an 'electrol dictatorship', if you know what I mean. Just like the Thaterite one we had in Blighty.

:) I have been a card-carrying member of the Liberal Party of Canada for 30 years.....(well, some of it as a young Liberal) and I guess I support their policies IN PRINCIPAL. Paul Martin is right in the centre as far as his policies go....
The Bloc will lose seats, the New Conservative Party (Note: they took out the word Progressive!) hopefully will go down the drain, since it is the Reformers in disguise.
BTW......my Avatar shows the front cover of McLeans, Canada's news magazine for this week!!!!

I recently joined the N.D.P. , and plan to help their campaign in my riding, Martin's veiws seem to be liberal on social isseus but concervative in economics. I voted liberal in the riding I lived in last election because there was no way a lefty would get elected in Medicine Hat Alberta, but now I live in Edmonton in the Hippy/ university neighborhood, so I can support the N.d.P. without too much fear of The concervative's Secret police coming to get me.
 ( of course you've never heard of them..... they're secret. They operate out of Ralph Kliens basement)
