A story has emerged in Ireland in the past few hours that demonstrate that Ireland has the attitudes of the dark ages whan it comes to the rights of women.
A rape victim who discovered she was pregnant as a result of the rape when to her doctor to seek a termination under the newly passed law that permits abortion on the grounds that the woman is suicidal. Under the law the woman has to be assessed by two psychiatrists and an obstetrician to determine that she is actually suicidal before the abortion can be performed.
The medical assessment resulted in a decision that the woman was in fact at immediate risk of suicide but instead of performing the termination, the doctors decided to force the woman to wait until she was 25 weeks and deliver the foetus by caeserean section. In response the woman went on a hunger and thirst strike. The hospital responded to this desperate action by going to court and getting legal sanction to forcibly re-hydrate her until the c-section could be carried out. The doctors then proceeded to re-hydrate the woman against her wishes and under this full-scale assault on her by the organs of the state the woman eventually agreed to the c-section which was subsequently carried out.
Needless to say - the so-called pro-life movement are cheerleading this astonishing attack by the state on this woman claiming it is a victory for their moral position and are determined to force through similar steps in all future cases where a pregnant woman is suicidal as a result of an unwanted pregnancy.
These events will once again lead to Irish women hiding their condition and travelling abroad to the UK to have a safe abortion carried out. There is an absolute and urgent necessity for all working class people on the island to campaign to force through proper abortion rights to protect the rights of Irish woman.
I have seen many disgraceful acts by the Irish state against women over the past 50 years, but none of them comes close to this return to the dark ages.
