What purpose does it serve historically? I know that for women it's important in class society for them to be monogamous, so it can be known which men the children belong to and property relations can be maintained, but why is it expected (not nearly to the same extent, but still a little) for men to be monogamous in many societies?

Cuz, if not, and I'm sure a lot of women would agree, there would be a lot of dicks being surgically removed. As in, I'll chop your dick off if you cheat.

I can see a few historical advantages to it economically it ensures steady population growth in the working class and for the upper classes it prevents their wealth from being dispersed/divided (and accordingly weakened) by inheritance as much.
Socially I suppose you could consider it a form of mutual cooperation in the sense that by encouraging monogamy you discourage cheating and the problems associated with it as you mentioned in your post.
Of course these are some generalised responses, cultural inertia (especially in regards to religion) and perhaps certain environmental conditions probably play a far greater role than these issues alone.

On the social level, polygamy is do damn hard, I have no clue how people can even attempt it. Even monogamy isn't a walk in the park.

Polygamy was a common feature of most societies in the past few thousand years. Western monogamy has its origins in antiquity, where men were legally prohibited from having more than one wife in order to increase the chances of acquiring wives for lower ranking men. It is largely cultural, whereas sexual relations themselves, which entail the sexual role of females is social.
In capitalism, it would be unnecessary to have more than one wife anyway, as the role of marriage was to pass property to an heir.
