I'd very much appreciate it if you could recommend a book that surveys cultural history from a Marxist perspective, particularly one that develops the thesis that romanticism arose in reaction to the mass revolutionary movements of the 19th century and that postmodern subjectivity is its effete endstage. How do you know such a book exists?

Your thesis is interesting but wouldn't it be truer to argue that romanticism developed as a response to capitalist industrialisation and as a critique of the emerging scientific rationalism of capitalist modernity?
