Futility Personified

I recall there was a spate of posts some time ago on the idea that the proletariat is brainwashed as being patronising.
I understand this as I might've previously mentioned somewhere on the board, there can be a feeling of political "hipsterism" when discussing politics with people who do not have the time or the inclination to read or interpret the state of things, not to mention that scholarly, school-mastery tone that some people might choose to take when explaining a theory / showing off how much they read.
However, seeing as this is a leftist board where everyone and the kitchen sink harps on about the working class (as it should be), assuming I have remembered this correctly, as there were a significant amount of people espouting the idea that a brainwashed working class is patronising, how do they reconcile this with class consciousness?
Surely class consciousness IS the rejection of bourgeois interests and the positive affirmation of working people's needs under an egalitarian framework?
Could somebody please clarify this for me, if there is actually a distinction to clarify.
