If you're curious about the above, it's the ironic nickname I've been given by some friends online.
My interest in the left started in a rather off the cuff place. Though my Father was an ex-Soviet Combat Engineer and my Mother an East German secretary, what really sparked my interest was well...Red Alert 2, which was my first ever video game that I played on my brother's lap as a three year old (and apparently sucked at).
I greatly preferred to play as the Soviets with their mighty apocalypse tanks, kirovs, and dreadnoughts and then actually decided to try and learn more about them. When I learned about the ideologies of eglitarianism that founded the USSR I was hooked, though later I learned the harsh realities of that regime in particular.
Now eleven years later I've traveled through many countries, the U.S, Sweden, U.K, Germany, South Africa, and Russia (in no particular order). With a family of six siblings I can't exactly say we've been showered with wealth (my oldest brother *still* cannot move out of the house due to being unable to afford both higher education and a house of his own) while I've often had to wonder why some people get to fly around private planes and fire mini-guns at hapless range targets while others lived in mud huts and starved.
I was also raised in an anti-corporatist household. And while I can't ignore my parents and siblings' contribution to my viewpoint I did try to do some research into the rampant assholery allowed by the world today because the big guy has more money and firepower than the common man. A world where Shell can bribe the Nigerian military to machine gun protestors or a dam company can be partially responsible for a landslide that killed thousands and get away with a "whoopsie-doo" because they are at this point supplanting any sort of people derived power is not a just world. And to my viewpoints, that's just not gonna fly. Supplementing this are my own social views, I suppose me being a generation Z kid makes me unable to see just why some people get their knickers in a twist about the LGBT community, feminism, just treatment of minorities in media, and the like espoused by a depressing number of the post-war generation. Where's the justice in preaching about how we defeated regimes built on hate when hate is still a rampant problem?
My other big interest of course is Science. I don't quite have the head for numbers to really have a hope to pursue a career in the STEM fields so highly sought in today's world, but I've tried to keep abreast of the human pursuit of knowledge and stay highly self educated. It's not that I don't trust the school system, as I've managed to remain rather free of awful teachers (though I have had very interesting teachers, like my history teacher last year was the biggest hippie girl you've ever seen, Howard Zinn fan, too left for the Democrat party, obsessive millenial tumblr user and more surprisingly also a Homestuck fan like me, which lead me to personally befriend her), but that I feel that the coverage of subjects I enjoy is generally too shallow.
But perhaps one of my biggest passions is fiction in all media. I love stories, I love to make them, I love to play them (role playing is a huge hobby of mine), I love to watch them, I love to read them, and hell I love to world build! But perhaps my least enjoyable time was in English classes due to the academic astablishment's incredible bias against speculative fiction. Why? Are randroid rags really more valid literature than the hobbit? Do I really have to be looked down on for bringing in Harry Turtledove's worldwar or the Culture? I can't stand the teachers dirty looks when I bring out a Ciaphas Cain novel. And marking me down on an open writing prompt for writing a science fiction story is bull.
I suppose overall I've become a radicalized social justice warrior in my short time on the third rock from the sun. And I hope to find more likeminded new friends.
Welcome :)

What are your political ideas though, if anything in particular? It looks like you've had quite the upbringing so far!

Ciaphas Cain? I'm sold. Although I prefer Eisenhorn/Ravenor.
Self-education/autodidactism? Win.
Red Alert? Uhhh... scratch that one. WH:40k - DoW and Company of Heroes were much more fun.
Third rock from the sun? Potential Jimi Hendrix reference.
Oh and the usual slight cynicism, extreme dislike of various social contradictions etc.
Well, seems like you've got an interesting package there! Welcome to the show.

As I mentioned on my page I'm not quite sure where on the ism list I fit into.
I promote the idea that society exists to ensure the maximum average happiness and quality of life of people and that people should help society do this job, people should also generally be free to do what they want as long as it does not harm others. Science should also be allowed to operate for the greater good rather than shackled to profit interest. Capitalism seems to be a system that encourages "fuck you got mine" mentalities and masturbation to social darwinism (a philosophy that insults a man who brought so much to science and one I dearly wish had a name change) and other "I did better ergo I am better" wankage.

40k is a favourite of mine even if GW charges criminal prices for it's services (and increasingly questionable ruleset, what with the RANDOM TABLE fetish and "game balance is bad" mindset) CoH though, it's good fun but I generally prefer the Hearts of Iron series for my WW2 needs.
I'm hoping to try a Crusader kings II to hearts of Iron 3 mega campaign though to see how badly I can derail history.

Hmmm you do seem to be espousing some form of utilitarianism.
Have you got the original three games of the DoW series?
I use the Blitzkrieg mod which is fairly realistic (for CoH). I'm also a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan.

Oh yes, I use the ultimate apocalypse mod for Dawn of war soulstorm. Nothing like battles so large they bring even high end computers to their knees.
As for STALKER, just looked it up. Not the biggest horror fan (It's less that it scares me when I'm awake than it is I'm worried about the nightmares I might get) but it seems like a cool concept!

Damn, I need to play Soulstorm again. Dark Eldar were a fun addition. Ordinary Eldar are my favourites.
As for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., well it's just... brilliant. It isn't an ordinary horror game, can be quite the action game. I suggest getting the Lost Alpha mod for free (standalone) or buying the original and playing it with the graphical and bug-fix mod called STALKER Complete. So many memories...
Now... get out of here STALKER! (meme).
Plus my avatar is actually a Loner from the game. Bet you didn't know that, dirty doxxer!

I'm rather fond of open world games so I'll be sure to try it out after buying some Paradox interactive games. The prospect of running history from 867 to the end of the cold war appeals to me mightily.
Post apocalyptic games are something I tend to compare to Fallout, and it seems that STALKER is rather grimmer than it's retrofuturistic out the ass counterpart, while less apocalyptic than say; Metro 2033.

Totally agree. I played Magicka a long time ago... and some other Paradox games. For history I love playing the older Total War games (with mods like Europa Barbarorum). Civ 5 seemed good for running the whole breadth of written history, although it has poor accuracy.
I assume you have played TF2?

That reminds me of my need to get Brave New World. Though I generally find Civilization to be more of a beginner's entry into the 4x genre, being rather simple (relatively) fast paced, and easy to learn. Whereas say Victoria is more or less impenetrable to anyone without prior knowledge of the genre and paradox games in general.
As for TF2, I have it on my computer but don't play it too often, for multiplayer deathmatch fun my main fix is World of Tanks.

I'm a Hellcat nut. Also a KV-2 nut. I can't be bothered to grind the German line. So boring before the Tiger I. We should play together on a Tier 6 match (furthest I've gone, didn't want to leave the Tier 5&6 zone, had the right balance for me). Need to put in a new graphics card after the last one overheated. :/
Edit: BNW is goooood. Can't play without it.

I have the KV-1, Hetzer, AMX-38 (which ranges from "unharmable" to "utterly useless" depending on the tier I play at), and M7 priest (why people complain about SPGs is beyond me).
And yeah, my future wishlist includes BNW, Beyond Earth, Galactic Civilizations III, and XCOM and XCOM Enemy Within.

I have the ELC AMX. It's worth it. You can survive the AMX 40. You will!
I also have the StuG. Hetzer was so much fun! After all... Hetzer's gonna Hetz! Until the StuG life chooses you, naturally.
I just don't have them in my garage. :(
Do you derp or use the last gun on the KV-1? Plus if you're going down the T-150 line then get the KV-2 first... boy it's a blast, literally.

I switch between both but generally find the 85mm more useful. I have learned the value of using HE shells on weak points though for borderline OHKOs on enemy tanks rather than slowly needling them to death. It certainly does deal with those pesky TDs and Light tanks and stops SPGs from getting their one lucky shot off.
I do hear that the KV-2 is a blast and I've learned to fear it in my Hetzer and KV-1, but I'm angling for the T-150. Not really sold on the heavium nature of the K-1S (especially when the tank's going to be completely rebalanced). I do have a plan to get on the British Medium line when I can though.
I'm amazed how many people don't pick up on shooting weak points or angling their vehicle though.

We are talking about tanks, Rosa.
I can't wait for lend-lease tanks. The Sherman Firefly is going to make an appearance. Oh and the KV-2 can one shot any Tier 5 tank (except some of the heavies) as well as hold its own in Tier 8 matches. It's worth grinding it for the top gun so the T-150 has it unlocked, making the grind much easier.
Hmm HE with weakpoints, I rarely did that except to track tanks and troll them (sometimes while sidescraping with the KV-1). Angling is incredible *cries with joy at the rush from bouncing a shot from two tiers above*.
Ugh I wish my PC had the new parts...
I personally don't find SPGs to be fun to play. I much prefer TDs or heavies. It's fun being the last person and knocking out the rest of the enemy team with the Hellcat.
Plus people rarely platoon effectively. I hope that we can change that, should I ever get the opportunity to play it again.
What mods do you use?

Hmm, I'll consider the KV-2 then!
I was convinced of the results of my strategy when I shot another KV-1 with an HE shell into that unsloped part of the frontal glacis plate and took out the remaining half of it's hit points instantly.
Yeah the M7 Priest is so far proving to be a bore. You take forever to line up a shot only to see it miss, rinse and repeat. It's not terribly fun.
Not platooning well is especially endemic in the European and SEA server where language barriers make the team work seen in America and Russia virtually impossible. As a result, team work is basically nonexistent outside of forming vague blobs of tanks.
On the plus side, none of the usual racists in gen chat open their mouths very often.
Mod wise I play vanilla. Weak spot highlighting mods feels like cheating and XVM seems to open the door to snobbery. Might try some sound mods though.

I recommend Gnomefather's sound mods or Kriegstreiber's. Prefer the latter due to turret rotation sounds. Also recommend crosshair mods. I like minimap mods that don't use XVM stats, just the last known location etc.

I can try. I wouldn't mind playing with people with zero coordination for once.
I aimed at a weak point at took out 200-300 or so HP. Might have been on the side or a lucky hit on the top armour, but it killed the tank good.
I'll make sure to try it out!

Though I've played for a few months now I've only really started to get into WoT's sub-culture. Also my forrays into Youtube frequently bring me into the strange land of Trololol and Gaston after a brief walk through related videos. This tends to leave me mystified as to how I arrived there after watching Bohemian Eagle. But getting a kill on higher tier tanks is very satisfying. Like blowing through a Tiger Tank's rear.
I don't like hippies.
Oh hi, disregard the above, welcome (I compulsively react to mentions of hippies, which is the fault of one of my comrades and ex-users of this forum).
Does anyone remember that story about Venetian secessionists trying to make a tank out of...I dunno what kind of industrial vehicle.
I'd be down for that. Not that I got the know how, but I could be the morale commissar.
You should pop out the hatch with a sword in hand and angrily point at things and demand to be driven closer to them to hit them with anachronistic weapons. :P

My dislike of hippies isn't based on a subcultural fad.
In my experience, it mostly tends to be that or some kind of dumb macho posturing.
E: it might have been a class thing 'back in the day', but at this point, a lot of it just seems to be university students hating on other university students.

Sadly, I had to uninstall the game recently due to some problems running other games on my computer. However, I will try getting a new account and re-download the game.
However, I do have one condition: we have to make a lemming train on a Tier 10 server with light tanks.

That and I don't think there's any point on the Maus where the AMX-38 can penetrate with any of it's guns. But it'll cause a few laughs to be sure.

But you should seriously get rid of the amx 38. God I can't stand that hunk of junk. The D2 and the french heavy line is a much sexier alternative anyways ;)
I don't play WOT too much anymore because my poor old laptop can't handle it, but I was a pretty slick character back in the day (and by that I mean I just trolled the whole time) But yeah you seem to have a good taste in tanks, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy the game in the future. Btw dat WOT subculture is where it's at, get acquainted with it. #MightyJingles4Lyfe

Yeah the AMX is only really fun when you're the highest tier tank around. Still, I'm trying to get into light tanks. That being said if the AMX 40 proves to be as miserable as the AMX 38 I'm likely to try other French vehicles. I've had enough suffering through Tier IV in the T-28.
When tier IVs and Vs are playing you may as well close your eyes and prepare for a beat down.

Thank goodness, I'm tired of people who try to play at "one man army" and then swear up a storm whenever their team doesn't support them. Even if it was readily apparent that their plan was essentially tactical suicide. Or them blaming anyone they can for losing with the longest stream of hurtful epithets you've seen.
CoD players calling you a mexican jew lizard is mostly amusing, LoL players seem to get much more personal with their insults.

And let's not forget the increasingly ridiculous unintentional parody of the technothriller genre it's plots have become.
I suppose the Russians after fighting a devastating civil war and annexing the former soviet republics, using only the ultranationalistic parts of their nation, just teleported millions of troops and heavy vehicles into the United States (they certainly didn't take any route that obeyed logistical considerations, early warning radar networks, or the laws of spacetime) and after losing this invasion force, just grew several million more soldiers out of the dirt to simultaneously attack and invade every capital in the E.U.
I also suppose that the long fractious and often staunchly nationalistic nations of Latin America also all just decided to sit down and form into this giant swarthy peril out to threaten good honest United States citizens. Invading Texas no less. And that the United States has such poor grasp of network security as to allow their orbital WMD system to be rather easily hacked.
Come on now, this search for enemies without resorting to the supernormal is just getting silly.

The term "noob" has been thrown around so liberally as to have basically lost any meaning besides "someone who plays in a way I don't approve of". In the same manner that abusage of the terms has degraded the phrases "fascist", "mary sue" and in 4chan's case a certain three letter word for cigars and gays.
But yes elitism is rather rampant in the gaming community as "hardcore gamers" gnash their teeth any time even the slightest concession is made to the "casual" demographic and is perhaps one of the least savoury aspects of the community.

I don't think I've recently seen
[email protected] used unironically really. But it is perhaps the strangest written dialect of English, especially since much of it's terminology seems like it'd actually take longer to type out.
As for the swearing on the internet? GIFT. Knowing that nothing more than the reputation of their pseudonym is at stake and that they're in a subculture that approves of such behavior, they have a carte blanche to be dickcheeses.
Xbox Live has always been a home for the hilariously arseholish since the days of Halo Combat Evolved if my elder siblings are to be believed. Highly competetive and fast paced games seem to bring out the most ****ish behavior in particular. See the behavior of Starcraft II players vs the behavior of Age of Empires II players.
And yes, too many games seem to be about "who can shell out the most for all the premium goodies" than actual skill. It's why I'm a bit worried about Warhammer 40,000 Eternal Crusade.
