I know this subject probably shouldn't be brought up in Opposing Ideologies but I really don't know where else to put it. So anyway, can a woman be drafted? If not, do you think this is fair? Obviously, I am biased being a woman, but, I think that as long as somebody can meet requirements for combat training it should be fine. Why not? I believe woman are generally cooperative and can endure pain and hardship equally if not better than a man.

:) Maybe the question should be: Who would want the draft brought back? Maybe people should be
more worried about their government stopping an illegal and unjust war and occupation of sovereign
countries....I hope NO ONE will be subject to the draft....if so, move to Canada.....we would be happy to
have you!!!!!!! :P

I know topic has nothing to do with politics, but there is nowhere else to post it. So, should and can women be drafted? Being a woman, I am obviously biased. I will offer my opinion regardless. I believe, if a woman can meet the standards of basic combat training, there is no reason not to draft a woman.
Needless to say, sombody must stay home with the children. But, why must this sombody be a woman? I think the individual with the higher salary should stay and raise the kids and support them financially. If a draft were to occur I would certainly want to be included.

What the hell are you talking about? We(the United States) have an all volunteer military. Unless you are from another country. Are you from a country that enforces the draft???

Agreed, many capitalists(with the exception of neoconservatives) feel the exact same way.

I'd agree that the Pentagon is most likely bullshitting and would like a draft due to the there own stupidity of sending out reserves for more the a year to Iraq and thus drastically lowering the recuitment rate into the armed forces, but the fact is that if they were ever to actually get legislation to even go into consideration(which is very unlikely), it wouldn't stand a chance in the senate due to extreme pressure by the people. Even average joes would be protesting this thing, not just far-leftists but liberals, moderates, and even some conservatives.

[COLOR=blue][COLOR=blue][COLOR=blue]Here in America when you turn 18 you are required by law to fill out a draft card and submit it to the federal government. Males are required, females however can do it on a voluntarily basis. But women can volunteer for military service.
btw, every year 'they' talk about bring back the draft, I wouldnt put too much thought into it.

Women shouldn't be drafted....
Neither should men.

No draft should be required at the moment for anyone (both men and women), what are you going to do with all that exact troops?

Well, I'd imagine they'd invade shit.
That seems to have become the mainstay of US foreign policy.
But, for right now, the US has more than enough troops so I doubt we'll see a draft any time soon.

I wonder why all the feminists that want women to have "equal rights" (read: have more rights) are not in support of women being drafted?

Show me one feminist here who support men being drafted but not women.

Now back it up.

The arguments for not wanting women in the armed forces are quite simple.
1. They are not as physically able as men.
No matter what the feminists think, this is undoubtedly the case. Men are, on average, stronger and faster than their female counterparts. The solution, however, is just as simple - base entry into the armed forces on fitness and physical tests alone. This would allow SOME women into the army, but the majority would remain men.
2. They are less well equipped than men to deal with physical and mental pain or stress.
I couldn't possibly comment on this, although I think there is a little merit in it...
3. In an intense battle situation, emotions are DANGEROUS.
This argument is, for me, the most compelling. If women were allowed into the army and joined male units on the front line, relationships would obviously develop. In a tense situation, emotions ARE DANGEROUS. They would conflict with orders and could potentially threaten lives. They would reduce discipline and efficiency; the cornerstones of a modern army. This is the reason that the army is "traditionally" seen as being homophobic. It's not that they don't like gays, (well, maybe it is...) but that relationships ARE AN INFLAMMATORY INFLUENCE in a fighting force.
It would be wonderful if all armies could be friendly and welcoming; it would be better if they weren't needed at all. But in the REAL world an efficient, disciplined army amounts to far greater than the sum of its parts - which would not be the case in a "mixed" unit. So, in my opinion, sexes should NOT be mixed on the front line. Nothing to stop women serving in auxilliary roles though; or to stop an all-female battalion storming the White House!! Feel free to hurl abuse my way, but I think this makes sense.

Wow. Somewhat surprising!!
Thanks!! :)
As for the draft... I think it's light years away over here (UK) but if the situation ever arose I would oppose it. If I was FORCED to fight, I'd serve as a medic or something. Killing just ain't my thing!!

The draft is immoral, just as forcing people to fight an enemy against their will is immoral.

Non-sexual relationships develop between men in an army unit.

The roman legions were enouraged to be gay. The emperors believed people would fight to impress and protect their lovers. Why wouldnt that work in our army?
