I know we have an international section for discussing politics in Russian, but I was hoping some people here would like to converse in Russian. Either about daily life, or questions regarding the language, or really anything at all. I'm trying to prepare myself for my next semester in Russian and was hoping some like minded leftists would like to join in on learning this exceptional language, спасибо вам.

Не трудный. Как ты училась кириллца? Когда ты начал заниматься русском языком?

It's difficult but fun once you get a hang of it I think. Do you know the Cyrillic alphabet? I believe almost anyone can learn it in a weekend if they devoted themselves to it. It's much more phonetic than Latin English and you can grasp pronunciations of other Slavic languages by learning it. Я могу помочь тебе!

I used to. I could even say "My name is X" and this kind of very basic stuff.
I wanted to read in Russian, so I took Gogol's Nevsky Prospekt. I was so frustrated and kept thinking "I'm never reading it, it's impossible, what's the point..."

There's a lot of great tool for learning the alphabet online, MasterRussian.com is pretty good for Russian basics.
The whole reason I'm learning Russian is so I can read the greats like Pushkin, Olesha, Erofeev, etc in their native language. "Nevsky Prospect" is tough enough in English, learning it in Russian is a few years in the future for me, so I can understand the frustration. Don't let that discourage you though, it takes time, but you can get the hang of it!
For reference: Меня зовут Ихс. Too ask someones name: Как вас зовут?

Yeah I understand a lil bit russian, but I can't speak it. Cyrillic is indeed easy to learn (I've learned it fairly quick when I was a child) and a great base for other slavic languages

Speaking Russian is much harder than just reading and writing it IMHO, especially with the vowel reduction. Can you read Russian script? That's the real challenge .
