View Full Version : animals being neglected next door, what to do?

So my neighbor has three dogs and completely neglects them. Two are in seperate fences and one has been on a chain now for over four months. I can see all three of them from my door. I don't really know what to do - it bothers me every single day, especially the one on the chain that just lays in the dirt all day. I checked to see if there is a law in this city against chained dogs, but apparently not. It wouldn't be so bad if they actually visited with the dogs, but all they do is put food out. Nobody even touches them. At first there was only two dogs, both in separate fences, then one day, to my dismay I see them bringing in the third dog to neglect - they put one on the chain and have literally never taken it off.
I don't know the neighbors and I can't really get near the dogs without them going apeshit barking. I have thought about putting a note in the mailbox at night. I wish I could just go up to their door and complain, but I seriously doubt that would accomplish anything aside making them hostile ...I dunno, any ideas?

you can either do the radical illegal leftist thing and rescue them and find good homes yourself or you can just call the animal cruelty cops on them, if they hurt defenseless animals calling them is just the right thing to do, i have googled the animal cops in your town and send the contact details through PM.
even if they dont take them away yet its file-building, if they get complaints often enough or one of the dogs dies or gets hurt they can at least take them away quicker.

There is little I can do short of releasing the one on the chain because I could feasibly do that from my own yard. Otherwise, I have nowhere to take the dogs, nobody to give them to - who wants neglected adult pits anyway? Also, I can't very well steal the leashed dog because I live next door and it would be sort of obvious.

Apparently a dog on a chain is not legally cruelty to animals in this area. I did check that out months ago. I thought of one thing however - I could mail an anonymous letter to them and threaten to file a complaint. At least that way it could be anyone on the block complaining about it.

I know this is a serious thread, so we should be serious, but it's also in chit chat rather than non-political, so I feel it's fair to be somewhat less serious and say that if the OP needs any advice on how exactly to do this, I suggest watching the opening scene of the noted animal liberation propaganda film 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.'

Call Animal Control and tell them the animal's being neglected.

end of the month! I already have my ticket and my visa is being processed.

I got near the chained dog today while I was cutting the lawn. He shoved his little muzzle under through the fence and I pet his nose. I think I am going to call and make a complaint.

Cops rarely do shit about animal neglect in my experience. I would just cut the fence and take them. And I would probably bust out every window of their car too as a warning OR get really psychological and just super glue a buck shot to their front step. If it's fucked for a child it's fucked for a dog. I wish I could just keep said people like that as pets and treat that the same.

Fuck filing a complaint like I don't believe what I'm reading. How the fuck could anyone in good conscious leave these dogs lives in the hands of fucking bureaucracy? Wtf

If the dogs get taken by the cops, they're going to be killed. End of discussion. You can try to talk to your neighbor, or just take the dogs. If you cannot take the dogs and cannot convince your neighbor to be kind to them, that is when I would file a complaint as a last resort. However, be aware that getting rid of those dogs will not necessarily prevent the people from just buying new dogs to neglect. Which solves little, ultimately.

First try your hardest to find someone who can adopt the animals. Then call animal control and tell them the situation. You can also tell them that you know someone who can adopt them, so they'll be (hopefully) less likely to kill them.

Just call animal control already. What are you waiting for? In the UK we have the RSPCA who prosecute. They have all these powers now.

My dad dealt with this when he was about 25 I believe.

May I ask what town you're in? I'm asking because there are probably people who can help out in your town. Please don't call authorities as the treatment dogs get at humans societies is total shit (on of my three dogs came from the humane society. They didn't take any care of her further than feeding /water and she had fleas and they wouldn't treat her and they tried to hide it with a big harness. They never even tried to figure out the shit she was allergic to, which, while we haven't figured it out, she's gotten a bit better.

And that's if they even get to a human society- don't trust the authorities not to just kill the dogs.

If your town has an ALF chapter send the dogs their way. Or get together a few friend who'd be willing to at least take care of the dogs for a while.

Btw my dad stole the dog from an abusive owner by helping the dog finish a hole it was digging under the fence to get out. That was my first dog.

I wish I could like this post. I love animals, but I am scared by animals who can 'take' me.
I would say so far that contacting a renegade animal rescue service is the best bet. They seem to actually care for the animals, and are willing to take the risks for the animals.
If they don't seem to harmful you could risk it yourself. I wouldn't trust the cops though. I saw an Alaska PD episode where a baby bear got its foot caught on a rock or something, and the cop's procedure for that was to shoot the bear in the head.
My teacher used to be a cop and he explained to us how loose the rules are for gunslinging when it comes to animals. If they so much as bark at you, they are presented as aggressive and can be killed with no consequences.
So if they're aggressive, then yeah, renegade animal expert/rescuer.

This thread pisses me off. The only humane solution is to cut the fence and remove the dogs and then (and this is most important) take them to the nearest veterinary hospital to receive medical attention then keep them until you adopt them out. That's what I would do and have done. If you call the humane society or animal control they'll probably put them down and 9 times out of 10 that's fucked up and there's nothing medically or socially wrong with the dog. God damnt, revolutionaries my foot, yinz won't even rescue some dogs? Tf

My first thought was to take the dogs and save them. But knowing the TYRANNY we're stuck in, you would be in deep shit if you do the right thing here.
Just do the next best thing and contact animal control. That's the best thing you can do without getting yourself in shit.

In response to those of you with the angry punk rock fuck-all solutions, (vox populi I'm looking at you), that I should just cut up my fence in order to carry all the dogs 2 inches to freedom on my back and I guess egg the house or something - Even if I could just steal a fully grown sketchy pitbull from my neighbor and keep it literally in my yard plain as day (stealing their car would less obvious because it doesn't bark) - I'm moving out of this house in 3 weeks and leaving the country - I can't very well take a stolen pit bull to Russia.

I decided to send them an anonymous letter (last Friday) threatening to call the animal cops. Hopefully they will decide that putting up a few feet of chain-link fence or giving the animals away is cheaper than the thousands of dollars they could be fined for having 3 almost certainly unregistered dogs. Also if animal control takes the dog(s), they probably will be eventually put to sleep even though the shelter here is pretty good about adopting animals out. Regardless, nobody wants neglected adult pitbulls and that is why the pound is absolutely full of them (frankly I'm of the mind that breeding them should be illegal anyway)

It was the best thing I could come up with. If any of you want to come in and do the revolutionary thing and liberate the animals, come be my guest. Seriously, you can stay in my guestroom.

I'm just saying. You could look to see if their is a dog rescue or even pitt rescue and give it to them. Idkk. I'm just saying taking the legal route here is going to get these poor little doggies killed and that's awful. Pitts are probably the easiest dogs to get rid of cuz it seems like everyone and their mother wants one and I think recently were names like no. 4 beat family dog.
