Okay, so Jingoism Week (July 1st-4th) is almost here. To counterbalance the inevitable flood of bullshit, I thought I'd make a thread of "things to hate about Canada". Fire away!

Your fascination, nay, sacred reverence of Tim Hortons is pretty disturbing. I mean who worships restaurant is crazy, lol, was it all aboot? Plus their national animal is a beaver, I am very suspicious of this and I feel others a should be too. Was so good about a deforesting, natural stream disrupting varmints? I suspect our neighbors to the North aka Britain Jr is up to something. The war of northern icey aggression is upon us! Resist crypto-British imperialism! Resist the moose filth! Oh the humanity! Could you imagine it? A polite genocide? That's worse than normal! We won't even see it coming! You can never trust overly nice people so how can or could we ever trust a nation howdiddly doodidly Flanders? Alas, I say to you could patriots we must be vigilant, we must attack, lest our glorious American lives of obscene vanity and gluttony may soon come to an end. We know very well the tea swillers across the water with their liver spotty Queen and cock food are behind this. George Washington's wooden teeth would spin in his mouth should we fail. Fellow patriots, if you are reading this, you are apart of the resistance. Give me diabetes or give me death!
Signed patriotically and emphatically,

I don't recall saying anything about "hating people". Where did you get that idea...? As for intangible things, I don't understand why intangible things "can't be hated".

"Canadian Bacon" in a nutshell. Except that whole part about the guy who "raided a company, merged it with his conglomerate, and then fired all of the employees" being in jail is nowhere near the truth, sadly enough. :(

Is it bad that I'd rather live in Canada than the US? In fact, I plan on trying the dating pool in Windsor. Since that's pretty much local to me. It's only across the river, and I figure if it works out. I can marry me a Canadian, and become a Canadian myself. I'll even join the Possum Lodge with Red Green and the gang. :p
That being said, fireworks are fun. I ignore the reasoning on why they are being shot off. But I'm not about to miss a good fireworks show. Detroit-Windsor has a good fireworks show, and I might be going. Fuck Canada Day, fuck the 4th of July. But give me some fireworks and booze please.

I personally love the winter. As far as desolate wastelands go, I'll take this over Death Valley any day! Also, at least the vampires up here don't sparkle!
MLCF, I agree about the booze and maybe about the fireworks. The bullshit that goes with it is just hard to "ignore" (who says we can't find another reason for booze and fireworks anyway, just like we could celebrate May Day instead of a monarch---be prepared to take a mandatory oath if you decide to move, by the way), nor should people annoyed by patriotism be peer-pressured into silence when it gets in their faces.
Sure, we do have nice lumberjack people. That, however, is only if you stay outside of the GTA, where a good chunk of the population lives. ;)

Well, I'm merely going off of what's here and now. Of course there are better reasons to celebrate. But I like hanging out with friends or family, and doing fun things. This is just an excuse to do so for me. I just view it as a party, and that's how I ignore the bullshit. I don't have to acknowledge the reasoning behind it, to enjoy myself. Also, the holiday pay is always nice too, when you're working. I used to get the 8 hours + time and a half. When I would work the 4th of July, at my old grocery job. It always gave me extra money to be able to do fun summer stuff.
As for the oath, if I were to become Canadian. Doing some stupid oath, to live in another country, isn't a big deal to me. I merely view it as a formality, to get what I want: citizenship.

Your laid-back attitude is counterrevolutionary.
In all seriousness, do you really think I was trying to argue that hanging out with people is counterrevolutionary, or something? That's not quite where I was going with this. Do you never feel even the slightest annoyance or urge to criticize the frenzy of patriotism, though (not even when it's right in your face)?
Of course I'm just moody and tired and shit, so maybe that's part of it, but hey, I don't think it's fair to say "You don't like jingoism? Buzzkill!"

Alrighty then... I didn't mean it that way, nor did I mean to come off that way at all. I'm sorry if I came off that way. I didn't mean to make you mad or anything either.
I'm not being laid-back about these issues. Of course it's annoying, and I've denounced bourgeois patriotism and nationalism in the past many times before. My point was that I'm merely enjoying myself, not celebrating the bullshit that we're against. That I can separate the fun, from the garbage.
I also was just mentioning the holiday pay thing as a side benefit, that some working people rely on. Getting extra pay is always good, I don't care where fuck it's from.

Thanks, and I can certainly understand that. I've just found that the line separating those things can be blurry occasionally (when to enjoy things and when to draw attention to something it seems nobody else will). Which battles to pick and when to relax is something I'm still kinda working out for myself, if that makes sense. I don't mean to be that snappy, though. That's probably a sign it's time to sleep.

You're right about how it's wrong for us to be peer-pressured into silence however. But I've learned over the years, just not to bother with debating certain people, or certain issues with certain people. That it just isn't worth my time, or the annoyance from it imho. Whether it's irl, on a site like this, or elsewhere on the internet. I prefer to avoid conflict in my everyday life. The stress from it is more trouble than it's worth. I always pick my battles. Because if you don't, it's just a whole lotta aggravation that you don't need to deal with. There's a time and a place for everything.

Exactly Rafiq. Plus, why move the Palestinians anyways? Maybe the Zionists should get the hell outta Palestine. Then they can go live in Canada. But then they'd just start oppressing the peoples of the First Nations instead. I'm not sure if exeexe is joking or not. So I'm taking what they said with a grain of salt. But I really don't see the humour in it, if they're actually joking.

There is more than enough geographic space to support both the Palestinians and Israelis. The problem is not one of nature, the problem is deeply structural.

Oh yeah, and I agree completely. I was merely saying what I said as a counterargument to moving the the Palestinians. No one has to go anywhere. I support the idea of a single secular state for both Palestinians and ethnic Jews. However, with that being said, I proudly support the PLO. Yasser Arafat's murder by Mossad was a travesty, committed by a genocidal regime.

Wow, Voxxy, that escalated quickly!
As for Palestinians, sure, Harper would be more than happy to let them in, as long as they were segregated in a desolate wasteland cut off from proper shelter and drinking water, with expensive and expired food, and with the state constantly harassing them for use of their land and its resources in ways that violate international treaties.
