Sup. I'm a 21 year old philosophy major. Mostly, I'm into Hegel and Marx, but I'm also a pretty big fan of Aristotle and a few others. I've been reading a lot of Lenin and Trotsky lately.

Besides that, I like post-punk, folk, and hip-hop; food; and being mistaken for homeless. Looks like a fun forum!

If you're a philosophy major, you should know that Marx wasn't a philosopher. He kicked metaphysics to the curve like every materialist should

Um okay, I really didn't expect this in an introductory thread.

First of all, I never called Marx a philosopher. That being said, it's one of three departments I've had the chance to study him in and was certainly the most comprehensive in doing so. Additionally, you can't "kick metaphysics to the curb" by being a materialist, since materialism is itself a metaphysical view. The attempt to do away with metaphysics is one I would associate with Heideggerianism, the post-structuralists, and the logical positivists, all of which are reactionary movements if you ask me. Marx wanted to find the "rational kernel" in the "mystical shell" of Hegel's system. I would also contend that the Left Hegelians, and most philosophers in general, greatly misunderstood Hegel and were not quite so far from him as they thought.

It's certainly a point of contention whether and to what degree Marx can be considered a philosopher, but I was trying to sidestep that whole issue when I consciously refrained from calling him one in my post. The idea that as a philosophy major, I should "know" he isn't is kind of insulting, and that's not how I would welcome somebody to a forum.

Hello there, sorry about the rudeness of some of our members. It's kind of an endemic problem. But anyway, I hope you stick around and I'd be interested in hearing more from you. :)
