Is he interesting, friendly, sociable? Is he the sort of guy you'd want to go out for a beer with?

I've had a few beers with him. :) He's interesting and smart and has good stories. Years ago, maybe 2008, I was part of a three-day class he led on dialectics using the curriculum Sojourner Truth Organization used. We did it retreat-style in Noel's cabin in A rural part of Massachusetts. It was the most rewarding intellectual experience of my life.

Thanks, I am going to meet him next month. I know he is pretty well known in the US, but I don't know much about him, and from what little I do know, I imagine we have very different politics. I have downloaded his book 'How the Irish...' to read. Is there anything else that you would recommend to get a basic idea of where he is coming from?

I'd also check out the following:
Workplace Papers (http://www.sojournertruth.net/workplacepapers.html): A group of articles from Sojourner Truth Organization, of which Ignatiev was a member. A few of them were written by Noel himself.
He also has a blog on PM Press's website, which is maybe better if you want to see what his current thought is:

It turned out that it wasn't possible for me to meet him, the timing just didn't work out.
