Pakistan police ordered to charge former CIA chief
Thu Jun 5, 2014 1:4PM GMT
Pakistans High Court orders police to file a criminal case against former CIA station chief, Jonathan Banks, in the country for his role in deadly drone strikes.
The court order was issued on Thursday by Judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui following activist Kareem Khan's court petition in 2010. Khan lost his brother and a teenage son in a US drone attack in North Waziristan tribal district on December 31, 2009.
The former CIA station chief fled Pakistan in 2010 after his identity was revealed through the court case.
"Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of Islamabad High Court ordered today registration of a criminal case for offences of murder, conspiracy, waging war against Pakistan and offences under the provisions of Terrorism Act 1997," against the ex-chief, said a statement released by Khan's lawyers.
Over 2000 people have lost their lives in US drone attacks since August 2008, many of whom were civilian casualties, a report by AFP says.
The aerial attacks, initiated by former US president, George W. Bush, have escalated under President Barack Obama. Obama has defended the use of the controversial drones as self-defense.
Several international bodies and human rights organizations have already identified the US as the world's number one user of "targeted killings" largely due to its drone attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
