So lads, I guess we need a thread for this, don't we?
Only 12/11 days to go, who you gonna root for? What are your predictions? Me personally, I'm rooting for Bosnia and Belgium. As for the final, I think Brazil and Spain will stand against each other.

Fuck the World Cup and FIFA. I have a friend living in Brazil who is protesting them right now for their human rights violations such as their forced displacement of people and demolition of homes. FIFA basically has control over the police forces there, and from what my friend has told me at least, it sounds like a pretty drastic situation down there in some places.

Why the hate against the German team?

the fan culture here is super disgusting and annoying and the team itself consists of mostly Bayern Munich players, so it's def worth hating. When I only see Neuer's or Lahm's face, my stomach turns around. In general, German patriotism tends to be somehow passive-aggressive, so fuck that and wish them a quick elimination.

I'll be cheering for whoever is playing England.
I'll also be happy to see wins for Algeria (because they have a Crystal Palace player), Nigeria (because they have an ex-Crystal Palace player) and Colombia because there's a Colombian bar that think will be fun for the matches so I'd like to keep that going as soon as possible. Although probably only Nigeria has a chance of getting out of their group.

I'm not sure who will win, I don't pay that much attention to international football but I suppose it will be someone obvious.

I'll be rooting for England even if I hate all the associated patriotic bullshit. It is interesting though, every world cup there's a feeling that maybe, just maybe, England has a chance but this year I've had this feeling from everyone that we just have no chance at all. The England squad is just so horribly average that I've got half a mind that we'll be knocked out the group stages after losing to Uruguay. The Spain vs Netherlands group is interesting considering the 2010 tournament.

I am really curious to see how Belgium will do. Heard a lot about their team, but haven't seen them playing yet.

A lot of people are assuming this World Cup will be easily won by Brazil, but their chances seem a bit overrated.
They are playing at home, but the path to the final isn't really easy: assuming there are no surprises, in the round of 16 they should end up against Spain or the Netherlands. Neither are as strong as they were four years ago (especially the Dutch), but it still is a very balanced match.

It's good if we have a newer team surprising us with their play but personally I would want Italy to make this their 5th cup - Level with Brazil.

Here’re some of my predictions:
Top Scorer - Messi perhaps
I support specific players in every team so no favorites really :D
Countries with most chances to win the cup: Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina etc

I think it's important to be aware of what's going on, yet I can't help myself and will enjoy watching the matches I have time for. It's definitely possible to watch the games without feeling guilty. I can only judge from the second half, but I disagree. Croatia was the more offensive team and pretty much controlled the game for most of the second half. Brazil only came around after the unjustified penalty and got a moral boost, it seemed to me. They were more effective with their chances, though, and in the end that's what counts.

A balanced match - a result like 2-1 or 3-2 would've been more fair towards Croatia.
Some crappy decisions seemed more because of the pressure of refereeing a World Cup opening match than to favour Brazil (they wouldn't need it in the group stage anyway).

Since you liked Geiseric's post alluding that we hate poor people for liking football; I suggest you and Geiseric should go into the favelas during a Brazilian match and as they people cheer in unison, jubilate, celebrate as the team they support wins, go around telling them "you hate the poor! Stop hating on the poor!"

Most Brazilians that protest and riot still support the Brazilian team, they oppose the organisation of the world cup, but not the team. It's also no use pouting at a play of football, this has no effect on the organisation of the world cup.

Tell that to the child prostiutes. Some people on the board have questionable views on this topic, but all professional sports are inherently chauvanist.

The tourists and culture surrounding FIFA is exclusively petit bourgeois, as with all sports. The American Super Bowl also has an institutionalized connection with the prostitution industry. Tourism in general only benefits bourgeois institutions. If Cuba wasnt open to tourists I don't think the endemic prostitution industry there would have much growth. You're absolutely fucking delusional.

So let me get it straight. I'm legitimizing all of the stuff associated with the Cup by

1) watching the games in my apartment by myself

2) commenting on them here and

3) commenting them in the company of my friends

Is that what you're telling me? That

1) it is my moral duty not to watch games and to

2) denounce it here as petite bourgeois decadence combined with

3) conducting socialist propaganda among my friends on the basis of speaking against the atrocities connected to it

(incidentally we did talk about the workers' conditions during the stadium building and so on)

Or in other words, there's some criterion apart from board rules which says I must not talk about this here...in the thread for the Cup. And that it is even possible that a discussion in Croatia might be beneficial for the Brazilian working class (really!?)?

Fucking despicable.

No what you propose is quasi-religious dictates: that we need to feel guilt for the revolutionary sins we've done, that we should feel guilty over our lack of socialist morality, and that we should live a Calvinist-like sober life without fun or enjoyment if it in any way coincides with human suffering (that is, basically everything).

These people arent even trying to expose FIFA, whose executives work hand in hand with the child prostitution industry. there are giant abuses of human rights which ARENT BEING TALKED ABOUT ON A LEFTIST FORUM. Why dont we just forget about the Qatar world cup, its just football right? Enforced and made possible by a military presence. At least move this discussion to a sports forum because this is sad. The world cup is a bourgeois spectacle which is being propped to the detriment of the international working class.

Well they are being talked about on this forum, just not here and not all the times. I don't feel the need to constantly and non-stop talk about injustice to alleviate the guilt of its existence. At least move this discussion to a sports forum? It's in the sports & health forum dumb ass.

Consuming commodities is bourgeois; might as well give that up Geiseric, and stop bothering us on this forum sustained by commodities and through commodities.

Im saying that youd be up in arms if you had personal friends who are child prostitutes in brazil, if you saw this discussion. you would want to puke if you saw people talking about the game instead of how to overthrow this system. I have the balls to tell american football fans what they dont want to hear, namely that wherever the superbowl happens, the child prostitution industry booms, and has been happening like this for a long time because of the kind of people who have the money for a vacation like the WC or SB.

Besides, economocally regardless of the morbid details, the world cup is a capitalist enterprise. If you want to end capitalism youre going to have to destroy FIFA which is owned by capitalists and run for a disgusting profit. It depends on the sweat shops the shoes and jerseys to be sold are made in.

I was really enjoying the world cup atmosophere walking home tonight. Then I heard the singing of the national anthem and it soured my mood.

England seem to be a bit dicey with the defending, I swear italy have whacked out a lot more quality shots than we have and have seemed more dangerous. Still, Johnson hasn't been as wank as he has for a while, Sturridge got his positioning perfect and Sterling is being quite threatening and much persistent. High hopes for this game, but we'll see....

Also, we know about the injustices, we are all leftists here, there is a separate thread. If the extent of our ideological dedications revolved around boycotting things we don't like we'd be revlib. Any grief, PM me. I want to mooch football knowledge off other posters.

Yeah, Balotelli was class. There was period in like the first five minutes where, for a moment, I thought England had scored (when they hit the side of the net) and then they maintained that tempo for a bit but then it trailed off and Italy dictated the level of play. Sterling was brilliant though and he'll be one to watch in the future.

I’ve also argued that soccer is a manifestation of the labor theory of value applied to sports—which may explain why socialist European nations do so well.
Soccer is a huge expenditure of human effort and exertion with almost no return. Under capitalism the idea is to produce the most output with the least amount of work.

A more appropriate economic analogy would be that of inflation in bourgeois society. Basketball is boring because the value of each goal is very little because there is so many of them. Another goal, and another goal, and another. Wow, 68 - 53 that's boring. The value of a goal in football is incredibly large precisely because there's so few scoring, and this makes it exciting. That probably explains why comparatively successful economies are often doing well in international football -- or something.

What was really striking was how Bosnia got the ball from Argentinia like...every fucking time?! Of course the resources could have been more productively used; but that's a common line we ought to say a bazillion times a day due to the way things work in capitalism.

As communists, we should prefer that resources are not "productively" used at all.

That's not to disparage the protest movement in Brazil; I'd hope it goes without saying that I personally support it.

Which movement, though?

The problem is, as you say, this extension into me watching the games or not. For one thing, such self-righteous stupidity won't help anyone. Except for the likes of Geis who can feel all smug about it. As for me, I'm gonna watch the games I think could be interesting.

I have the feeling that, at least in Brazil, it is the anti-cup "movement" (as if it was a movement, at all) that is decidedly anti-poor. How dare those stupid Blacks and pardos and assorted poor enjoy life and be happy about foolish things such as football, instead of being angry about the gay dictatorship and about laws forbidding child spanking and right-wing "comedians" getting bashed for their unrepentant racism and sexism? Instead of supporting our petty-bourgeois rights to fly on planes without having to share them with farofa eaters, or our right not to pay taxes?

... but all that is of little concern.

Not true. Sex with a minor is legal and prostitution is legal. Unless you think those things are choices.

Sex with a minor is legal? Depends on what you call a "minor". Sex is illegal with those under 14; indeed, it is tantamount to rape (what Americans would call "statutory" rape), and it carries the same penalties as rape (8 to 15 years imprisonment, as provided in article 217-A of the Penal Code).

Prostitution is semilegal, but paying for sex with those under 18 is illegal, and carries a penalty between four and ten years in prison (article 244 of the Statute of Children and Adolescents).

So, no, it is impossible to rape anyone legally. Sorry to damage your first-world sence of superiority, but you are just ill-informed.

14 to 18 is a big difference,

The difference between 14 and 18 is the following: having sex with someone under 14 is a crime regardless of any circumstance, and it is equated to rape. Having sex with someone between 14 and 18 may or may not be a crime, and is only rape if violence is involved. But paying for sexual relations with anyone under 18 is a crime in and of itself, so there is no "legal rape of children prostitutes in Brazil" at all.

especially when many people in favelas arent considered citizens.

Well, law is law, reality is a different issue. But breaking a law and getting along with it is very different from "legally committing a crime".

And of course, from a legal point of view, all people in favelas are considered citizens. That they frequently lack the means for affirming their citizenship is a different issue - that won't be solved by White guilt and liberal lies about "child prostitutes".
