An event in Seattle's history that's generally forgotten today, one that could have been historic had it continued and spread.

For several days, workers demonstrated that they could organize to run things without the bosses. It's no wonder it's an event that's little known in the US today.

And what followed was

In 1919–20, several states enacted "criminal syndicalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criminal_syndicalism)" laws outlawing advocacy of violence in effecting and securing social change (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_change). The restrictions included free speech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_speech) limitations.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Scare#cite_note-8) Passage of these laws, in turn, provoked aggressive police investigation of the accused persons, their jailing, and deportation for being suspected of being either communist or left-wing. Regardless of ideological gradation, the Red Scare did not distinguish between communism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism), anarchism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism), socialism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism), or social democracy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_democracy).[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Scare#cite_note-9)
