So I watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2 twice this weekend. From what I observed, I would say this was an anti-capitalist film.
Oscorp: The Bourgeoisie
Harry Osborne packs the complete bourgeoisie package. He's rich, arrogant, and inherited all his wealth from his father (so much for hard work). However, Harry is almost anything but a happy man. During the meeting with him and other Oscorp officials, all he is focuses on is wealth and capital. That is until he finally meets his old friend, Peter Parker, after about 10 years. Proving that money cannot buy true happiness.
However, Harry is a dying man, as in his not-so healthy family bloodline, lies a cancerous gene known as "Retroviral Hypodysplasia". Being a capitalist, Harry thought he could use money to cure himself, and while it did cure him, he ended up become a monster.
Electro: Stalin
Max Dillon starts off as an average joe, a common man, a working subordinate man, a proletariat. He is neglected and ignored by bourgeoisie society, only being seen as an expendable tool. This angers Max greatly, to the point where he imagines friends, and fantasizes about rebelling (revolution) against his overlords.
After falling into a tank of genetically-modified (GMO) eels, Marx gains electric powers, thus allowing him to finally turn the tables against those who once oppressed him. And instead of treating them how he would like to be treated, he bullies them instead, just as they once did to him.
Spiderman: Lenin
Like Max Dillon, Peter Parker is nothing short of an average joe. He isn't the alpha-male, he isn't Mr. Popular, and he isn't very rich. However, Peter never harbors feelings of hatred or desire of revenge against those who did him wrong (at least not in a demented sort of way). After becoming Spider-Man, Peter can easily become the new bully. But he doesn't, instead, Peter uses his powers and abilities to help people. He is a symbol of hope, and he encourages everyone to do good in society.
During the scene where Peter saves that little kid being bullied, and the scene where he saves Max Dillon, is further proof of this.
Both of the new SpiderMan films involve him defeating someone who worked for OsCorp (bourgeoisie). Keep in mind, Spiderman is still a proletariat. Harry is Bourgeoisie. Spiderman defeats Harry. Thus, SpiderMan established a dictatorship of the proletariat. Whereas Electro, wanted to establish a Degenerated Worker's State.
So what do you guys think? Is the new SpiderMan movie series anti-capitalist or what?
