Alright, I know I've had a lot of questions about historical figures, but here's my latest, and one a few of you can hopefully answer well - what can you tell me about Camilo Cienfuegos? He seems to have been forgotten for the most part (compared to Che, at least) after his plane crash. I've only been able to find one biography of him, but it was out of print and published by the Cuban government, anyway.

all i know (or think i know) is that he wasn't a commie but was loyal to the revolution.and i wonder if Cienfuegos is his real name because i think it mean 1000 fires or something

It does. It's also the name of a city in Cuba, not the one named after him, but an old Spanish colonial town. The name of that town came from an indian name for somewhere around there, and I'd guess that Camilo, or his family I suppose, got their names from the town of Cienfuegos.

Thanks, Hammy :)
He seems like a very interesting guy. More admirable, at least in my eyes, than Che, though far less exposed.
I'll have to look into him some more...

Ah yes, Cienfuegos, beautiful place - more of a town than a city though.. The main plaza bares a large Jose Marti statue... Che named his son Camilo..

Camilo Cienfuegos --- a great man. In Cuba, he seems to get quite a bit of recognition, but outside of Cuba I would say that he deserves a lot more recognition.
Danton, I'm assuming you've been to Cuba? How was your experience?

Iv'e been twice, once in 99 as an ignorant tourist, staying at the Nacional, enjoying all the luxuries ordinary Cubans never sample etc..
Second time around 2001 - I stayed in a casa familia, these are at least partially, technically illegal but tolerated and the only way for a foreigner to get some kind of insight into real Cuban life.. Anyway Iv'e bored everyone with this before - I would just say go and find out firsthand, it's a cliche but Cubans are the warmest and most selfless people I've ever met...

yeah, few know about his importance. Good friend of Che's and he really helped the revolution. I too would like to read more about him.
