Really interesting documentary I thought, worth a watch if the subject matter intrigues you.
I thought the most interesting part was all the inmates talking about how the "vor code" was getting constantly undermined and ignored by the new influx of post-USSR prisoners, who only cared about drugs and money (with more Russian "new money" & addicts coming in the penitentiaries).
The whole bit of prison mythology in regards to tattoos of Marx and Lenin was interesting too.

Do you by any chance remember what book?

I like a lot of the placement of the tattoos and I like how they look but not really down with the meanings aside from maybe the thief symbolism

I honestly don't know much about this subject. What meanings do they tend to have that bother you?

a lot of them are nazi symbols, homophobic/transphobic, dominating, etc.. if you do a google search for russian criminal tattoos a lot of it pops up its become fairy trendy i guess.

Yeah I did a little googling after I asked and a lot of them do seem to be fucked up. I kinda like the ones about being friends in a place of confinement and the ones about thievery. Still haven't finished looking yet.
ETA: there seem to be some anti-authoritarian ones as well.

Yeah I've noticed the anti-communist sentiment. Te thing I'm reading doesn't delve much into the pro-nazi ideas behind them but I don't doubt it.
