Apparently, Fidel Castro's Cuba and Francisco Franco's Spain maintained covert relations throughout the Cold War and Spain even sent ships to Cuba to break the American blockade.

In fact, when Francisco Franco died in November 1975, Castro declared three days of mourning for the man who killed upwards of 200,000 - 300,000 Communists during his 36 year regime.

It is things like these that make me doubt Fidel Castro and his commitment to Socialism. Even today, Castro's Cuba is in bed with the reactionary Iranian Islamists.

What are your thoughts about this and was Castro simply Communist out of convenience to gain Soviet bloc military aid and economic aid in order to gain allies for his rabid anti-Americanism fueled by being a closet fascist sympathizer or was he genuinely dedicated to the Socialist cause?

P.S.: When Fidel Castro was younger, he used to read the works of Spanish Falangist and fascist Jose Primo de Rivera.

Franco is estimated to have killed about 500,000 after the war (which he and 2-3 other guys were to blame for) actually. He murdered a similar % of Spain than Stalin of URSS. According to something I once read he ordered 10,000 executions for each Mussolini did.

I am someone from the state "Spain" and... fuck Franco.

BTW, the party currently ruling in Spain with absolute majority "People's Party" still upholds Franco. Some of their militants constantly get reported in the media doing fascist salute, as do some of their mayors, one of which has a big portrait of Franco in his public office, etc. They gave 300,000 euros of public money to do a cosmetic improvement on the "Valle de los Caidos", which is a fascist graveyard made by Franco where all his soldiers got buried. And they give public money to the organization "Fundacion Nacional Francisco Franco", founded by Franco's daughter and dedicated to spreading propaganda about the dictator. The founder of PP was a minister of Franco's regime, kinda like Goebbels was to Hitler. There are still many public symbols of the old fascist state which they refuse to take down. I may do a thread on this if there is enough interest.
