Essentialism

I went to a philosophy society meeting last night and the topic was 'essentialism and biological classification'. It interested me the idea of what makes a species a species, how do we define one over another. I think the sub-heading was 'Do species have properties?'

Wondered if any of you had come across it in your reading, studying or just in general. Or if any of you had any particular opinion on the matter.
