I have very little knowledge of the USSR apart from the October revolution, events preceding it and events until Lenin's death. Apart from that, quite frankly, I couldn't even tell who came to rule after Stalin's death...

Having said this, I wonder if someone could recommend me a book, which would be about political developments in the USSR. Well, a general book about the history of the USSR and some analysis of major events would be great.

I would prefer something balanced, that is to say, I want neither some Stalinist glorification of the USSR nor Emma Goldman. If someone could recommend something it would be great!

The Soviet Century (http://www.versobooks.com/books/12-the-soviet-century) by Moshe Lewin is pretty good. Unfortunately haven't been able to find a place to dl it so you might have to shell out. ;)

As for now I will read A History of the Soviet Union From the Beginning to the End by Peter Kenez.

EH Carr wrote a ton of books on the Soviet Union.

I highly recommend them as well. I've only read 2 of the actual volumes but he later wrote a condensed version of his research which I read and think is very helpful to folks like the OP and myself when I read it:

The Russian Revolution from Lenin to Stalin 1917-1929 (http://www.amazon.com/Russian-Revolution-Lenin-Stalin-1917-1929/dp/0333993098)
