MAY DAY 2014: SETTING THE STAGE FOR CHANGE
The United Mayday Committee's annual celebration of the international workers holiday will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at the Steelworker's Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto. Join us for another lively evening of politics and culture.
Speakers include Fred Hahn, President of CUPE Ontario, Tzazná Miranda Leal, Provincial Organizer, Justice for Migrant Workers, Dave McKee, Toronto Association for Peace and Solidarity, and Sam Hammond, Labour Secretary of the Communist Party of Canada.
Performers include The Araz Dance and Music Group, poets Patrick Connors and Jeannine Pitas, singer-songwriter Drew Gonsalves (of the popular band Kobo Town), spoken-word artist and multi-instrumentalist Beny Esguerra and singer-songwriter Zack Morgenstern.
This year's May Day event is endorsed by a host of labour, political, community and solidarity organizations, including: Association of United Ukrainian-Canadians (Toronto Branch), Barrio Nuevo, Canada-Cuba Friendship Association, Casa Salvador Allende, Canadian Labour International Film Festival, CODIR-Canada, Colombia Solidarity Campaign, Committee of Progressive Pakistani-Canadians, Common Front Latin American Caucus, Communist Party of Canada, CUPE 4400, FMLN - Toronto, Friends of the Communist Party of Greece, Friends of the Cuban Five Committee, Friends of the Iraqi Communist Party, Friends of the Tudeh Party of Iran, Greater Toronto Workers Assembly, Greek Canadian Democratic Organization, Indo-Canadian Workers Association, International Network in Solidarity with Colombian Political Prisoners, Labour Council of Toronto and York Region, Latin American and Caribbean Solidarity Network, Latin American Trade Unionists Coalition, May 1st Movement, No One Is Illegal, 100,000 Poets for Change, Organization of Iranian People's Fadaeian (Majority), Rainbow Sea of Red Open Collective with Cuba, Toronto Association for Peace and Solidarity, Victor Jara Cultural Group, Worker to Worker, the Young Communist League and many other progressive organizations.
Admission is free. Food will be served and there will be a cash bar. Doors open at 6:30.
Don't miss the rally and march on Thursday May 1st, gathering at Allan Gardens at 4:30. Organized by No One Is Illegal, the May 1st Movement and the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty.
