I knew the situation of migrant workers in GCC countries was horrid, but still this surprised me (although it shouldn't have). Couldn't find much about it on google, but in the Dutch people's paper there was an article about how police have arrested hundreds of thousands of people, locked them up in horrible conditions, and then deported them back to their country of origin. It has deported 25,000 Somalis and 160,000 Ethiopians and many more Asians in order to combat unemployment (). Civil volunteer groups with makeshift weapons went around in migrant neighbourhoods and harass 'illegal immigrants'. Subsequently, thousands of scared migrants reported themselves to the authorities the following days. Recently, one person died in a 'stampede' during detention centre riots. The newspaper notes that this has received little coverage and attention due to financial interests between the West and Saudi Arabia.
Exposing these Gulf regimes should be one of the highest priorities on the international agenda, yet it receives comparatively next to no attention from Western leftists.
