Why did the Bolsheviks disband Estonia's Provincial Assembly in 1917? Why did they seem to want to hinder Estonia's independence movement? The British, French, Fins and other reactionary forces didnt arrive in Estonia until late 1918, so the Bolsheviks didn't seem to be attempting to push out reactionary forces, unless the White Army held major political sway in Estonia at the time.

Why did the Bolsheviks disband Estonia's Provincial Assembly in 1917?
Because the Assembly was opposing the Estonian Bolshevik revolutionaries and refused to recognise the Bolshevik-Left SR government of Russia.

Why did they seem to want to hinder Estonia's independence movement?
Because it was being spearheaded by German Empire-leaning Estonian chauvinists.

The occupation of Estonia by the German Empire began in November 1917. it was completed by February/March 1918.

Thank you for your reply, Raquin. How was the Assembly opposing Estonian Bolsheviks? My understanding is that the Assembly allowed the Bolsheviks to participate in the (one?) election they held. The Bolsheviks reportedly fared poorly in this election (land owners won, whilst land reformists didn't), which spurred them into a little coup.

You mention that Estonia's independence movement was spearheaded by German "chauvinists". Did the Assembly seek an alliance with Germany? Who comprised the Assembly (where did their sympathies lie)? Did the dukes and governors sympathetic to the Tsars belong to this Assembly, or was the Assembly, which I believe was set up by the Russian Provisional Government, intended as a first step in Estonia's break away from the Tsarists?

Because Bolsheviks didn't have support of Estonian society. It was pretty small group in fact in 1917. And Bolsheviks didn't have majority in Russian society too. This is why they didn't allow free election.

IMHO Lenin thought that people are too stupid to govern themselves. He thought that the vanguard party is just better way. And how wrong he was Stalin showed fully, when he became the vanguard party's leader...
