They are so pleased not to be caged any more.

I hope the mindless slaughter of animals for trivial reasons gets banned and is looked down upon in the future.

Yes, it is rather sweet.

Just a little bit of correction, though: These cows weren't being held in the barn permanently. They were only in the barn for the winter (cows react the same way when they're going into the barn, because they know they're going to get fed and groomed). They're naturally playful creatures.

This was one of the old-fashioned, open range dairy farms. Now, factory farms on the other hand are a different story.

Yeah, this video alternated between poignancy and making me hungry.

Yeah....now that you mention it, I could really go for a roast beef sandwich right about now.

Okay, so you guys can't go five fucking minutes without thinking "we must kill cows because cows are tasty" - wonderful. Aren't you lovely people.

I find that this attitude is typically a male thing. It's basically just macho bravado. It's pathetic, really.

'I must make sure everyone knows I don't care about the cows and I want to eat them!!!' Yeah, yeah, blah, blah. We get it, you don't care about the cute animals. 'I'll show those people who funny and indifferent I am for caring about stupid cute animals.'

Dicks. Fuck off!

Jeeze people, can't we just watch and enjoy the cows being happy? I mean, sure, I'd still eat them but I'd rather they be happy in life. That's a little contradictory, I know, but I think that they should be happy cows and not given the chance to be what they are, a grazing animal.

I don't really see a discrepancy between wanting to see the cows be happy and wanting to eat them at some point in the unspecified future.

I meant, I find the juxtaposition between you feeling something poignant while simultaneously wanting the thing that elicits poignancy killed for you to eat, disturbing

Well, it's not simultaneous - that'd be schizophrenia (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1129&dat=19911214&id=h8c0AAAAIBAJ&sjid=nG4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=6892,4848986). I don't justify eating meat on the basis that "it's natural," but I think that saying that kind of reaction is "natural" works in a purely descriptive sense of the word. Like those videos where the tiger cuddles with the small abandoned churchmouse or whatever, and then when you read further you found out that the tiger ate it a few days after the video was taken. We are contradictory animals, and to me alternating between empathy and carnivorousness is kind of part and parcel of evolving as a social mammal on the one hand and as a predator on the other. (This, people, is the basis of cognitive dissonance, not just arguing two contradictory things at different times.)

Every syllable of this is pure, unadulterated horseshit. It is nothing but self-justifying drivel. Just saying 'well this is how I am' doesn't make it any less disturbing.

...not to add oil to the fire (he said; while pouring the gasoline) but happy animals produce better meat...milk, wool, eggs, offspring...etc.

I'm a horrible carnivore but I really do find unadultered nature and flora and fauna beautiful. How amazing our planet can be when it's not pillaged and destroyed by us.

I've heard that if humans were to suddenly vanish from the planet, dairy cows (and cattle generally) would go extinct.

how can you engage in actions against other animals that feel physical pain and emotional distress while decrying such things against humans? It is magical cult thinking that allows this obvious fault in logic to exist

Who says we decry such things when done against humans, as a rule? The revolution will not be nice.

For that matter, I could go for a bourgeois steak but apparently that's illegal, hmpf.
