The current situation in Ukraine will contribute to internal strife within the EU. Countries like the Baltics and Poland are the most vocal in their resentment against Russia's involvement, while other countries, like Germany and the Netherlands are more reserved in their accusations. In my expectations, this will cause a rift and the Polish government will start to ask itself what the benefits are if the EU refuses to make a joined effort.
The EU likes to propagate that it is responsible for decades of peace and prosperity but that's a lie. The EU in it's current form, is different then the organization that started as the European Coal and Steel Community. The EU project started in 1992 and this is actually the 3rd time they failed miserably in their diplomatic efforts. (1st being the Yugoslav wars and 2nd the mishandling of the European crisis). The EU still relies heavy on the US for military support even though the project was started to form a block against the US influence.
I predict that during the coming elections pro-EU parties will use the Ukraine situation as propaganda for a federal Europe which is ironic cause they contributed in this crisis by holding out a carrot to desperate Ukrainian civilians with vague promises.
The only thing the EU has to offer is austerity. The dream of a federal Europe will shatter, because politicians forced this dream against the will of the people. They ignored the referendums when people voted 'no' against the EU constitution. They contributed to the rise of extreme right parties throughout Europe. EU policies actually serve to further disintegrate Europe.
