I used to work for a fast food restaurant. I made $9 an hour. I worked as the maintenance guy. I did things like changing light bulbs, dismantling and cleaning the cooking equipment, taking out the trash, and cleaning the bathrooms. The managers all loved me. Everyone there loved me. I was a great worker. I did my job well, and the managers praised me for it.
So after working there for three months, getting all the praise for being a great employee, I figured I’d ask if I could have a 25 cent raise. The manager told me that I would have to wait a year to get a raise. So I quit. And I don’t hold any hard feelings towards them, even though maybe I should.

My sister worked at McDonalds for 4 years, and worker her way up to a manager. She got $8.25 an hour the whole time she worked there, and she asked for raises and never received them. "Oh, you're gonna have to wait." But then others would get raises, but never the female employees. She eventually quit and worked at a place that sold picture frames and painting frames, but the owner was a sexist pig and treated her like she couldn't do anything and the pay she got was shit. Now she works with the mentally handicapped and people who've been through severe car accidents, and the management there loves her and she's making something like $11 an hour. For the business I own, I pay all of my startup emplyees $10.00 an hour, unless we got them from an agency like ManPower, who charges us to pay the workers. Which sucks, I know how things are and i'd rather pay my employees a lot more. I make $15 an hour, and so do two of the employees we have currently.

I'm a vegetarian, but I still don't even eat chips from McDonalds or BK or any of them (cos fuck em). I'm sorry you had to quit, it sucks being unemployed.

Not necessarily. I pretty much can do everything. I fixed the electronics on the military jets that helped the jets not to get hit by missiles (back before I was an anarchist), I ran a printing press, producing wrapping paper, I manufactured tape, produced screws at a factory, I drove 18-wheelers for four years all around the eastern U.S., I've installed sheetrock in houses, done farm work, and I worked in fast food cleaning the bathrooms.

And when I was a young kid about 10 years old I worked 30 hours a week shoveling dirt and bricks, and hauling logs for no pay.

When you became supervisor at my restaurant after a couple years, they would give you a 15 cent raise. If you questioned it they would say "Ohh no, but it looks soo much better on a resume. You do it for the experience, not the money!"
Like I guess it's true that it looks a bit better on a resume, but they totally abuse that card. It's taking advantage of you. So I've been working at a fast food job full time for two years and it's not about the money? Fuck you

Well, he's restricted, so he can't post in non-political. It's my fault he's restricted. I jumped the gun and reported a 'pro-lifer' but he doesn't really fit that definition.

Thanks Sinister. That means a lot. I appreciate it =)
And as for why I posted this, it's because I was angry about some tea-partiers who were calling me a lazy sponge. It pissed me off, and I needed to vent.

McDonald's caught red-handed
Chris,
You've got to see this. It's infuriating.
Lakia and Kwanza are former McDonald's managers. They sat down for an interview to talk about how their superiors at McDonald's forced them to cheat employees out of their pay. You won't believe what they have to say. (http://robbedonthejob.org/?utm_campaign=LowPay&utm_medium=partners&utm_source=robbed-0401-MoveOn)

When I was living out of my car, in the parking lot of the very McDonald's where I worked, a lot of this same stuff happened to me. It's so infuriating to see, but it's not surprising. A new poll released today reports that 89% of fast food workers say it happens to them.
We need everyone to see this video. Watch it for yourself, and share it far and wide. (http://robbedonthejob.org/?utm_campaign=LowPay&utm_medium=partners&utm_source=robbed-0401-MoveOn)
It's pretty clear from the video that the whole industry needs to change, not just our wages – and that's exactly why we're fighting for $15 an hour AND the right to form a union without retaliation.
It's good to know we can count on you to keep on making a difference.

BREAKING: May 15 strike
Chris, Whoa. Just heard: next week we're going global.
Get this: On May 15th, fast food workers everywhere, not just the U.S. but on every continent where McDonald's operates will be standing up for $15 an hour and the right to form a union without intimidation.
Global. Everywhere. Are you with us?
We know that profitable fast-food companies can afford to give workers a decent wage, avoid stealing from employees' paychecks, and respect our right to form a union. And with workers worldwide adding their voices, nothing can stop us.
Help us spread the word that fast food workers are taking a stand all over the planet. Share this image on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/LowPayIsNotOk/photos/754862274544492/?type=3&theater) right now!
http://action.lowpayisnotok.org/page/-/515ImageShare450.jpg
It's time for the fast-food giants to treat the people who make and serve their food with the same respect everywhere. Share our message (https://www.facebook.com/LowPayIsNotOk/photos/754862274544492/?type=3&theater) and join the worldwide movement for fair wages and respect.
Sincerely,

I stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in the food service industry. I wonder if the Culinary Union would expand to include fast-food workers?

Fast food jobs are not meant to be a form of permanent employment, but a temporary source of income for young people until they find a better job. Live is competition and whose who have lost may even end up doing such jobs unfortunately for longer than intended. When searching for a job, try to select not only based on wage but also other factors like if increased experience makes you more valuable than a novice with one month training. Then you can blackmail your employer for wage increase :).

Um, yeah. Back here in reality (for me, that's the USA) the average fast food employee is 29 years old. The argument that this job is "meant" for kids as an entry level job has been used to defend children working certain jobs in coal mines and is still used to defend internship/slave labor at many white collar jobs that undercuts those workers who are more expensive due to experience, work agreements, retirement/401k etc etc.
What's really disturbing is the argument, as stated in the OP, that the response to a group of workers asking for a living wage is to say they don't deserve it. They shouldn't get paid that much because they don't have a job we associate with being glamorous.
That argument really pisses me the fuck off.
There are a lot of older workers in the retail industry these days, which is a change from the past. I wouldn't be surprised if fast food establishments are following a similar trend.

Also to add on to what Abe said, even if these were "meant" for young workers (they're not anymore at least) a worker's age does not dimish the amount of labor power the the capitalists are exploiting. I am a 20 year old fast food worker and even though I'm younger than most other workers there I still produce lots of profits while getting paid minimum wage.
