On this day, March 17th, in 2009 Haregewoin Teferra died. She was a Christian foster mother to many children whose parents died of AIDS. She gave up the middle class lifestyle and used her money to operate an orphanage. She lived in poverty for many years with these children because she could not afford modern conveniences. It wasn't until most of her work was done that she became recognized by Western civilization, and offered funding for her work.
