View Full Version : Hey - remember me? How has revleft been? How has life been?
Hello everyone,
Its been about three years I think since I last logged onto revleft (and then I think I was only around briefly) and I decided to log back in on a whim. How has everyone been?
- What interesting stuff has happened in your life in the last few years?
- How has revleft changed and developed?
- Whats your take on the world over the last few years?
- How have you changed? How have you stayed the same?
For my part, I think my political philosophy has developed very substantially since my thinking earlier in my time on revleft. I do not necessarily hold any of the beliefs that I did earlier (though some I do obviously) apart from a continued commitment to social, political, economic and legal equality, on the broadest possible basis, and, therefore, to a socialist socialism of some form (though I'm less confident about precisely what form it should take).

Hello everyone,

The time Stalinist Speaker and Bolshevik Sickle got banned, it was a huge shitstorm and controversy. But funny too.
How has revleft changed and developed?
It's stayed the same, as far as I'm concerned
Whats your take on the world over the last few years?
Screw it
Hello
Mostly smug, arrogant, and stubborn
Sorry!
The time Stalinist Speaker and Bolshevik Sickle got banned, it was a huge shitstorm and controversy. But funny too.
Don't think I knew them...but then I'm forgetful.
Screw it
The world is both frustrating and beautiful, tragically disappointing and full of potential. Whatever you feel about it, it is the only one we have, and as such, demands care, attention, and that we make the most of it.

Don't listen to Rosa, she's been trying to get cookies from everyone, she will even say she's the new cool kid to get them, as you can see.

My role in the forum is to look at my rep and clap a little when it goes up.

Hey! I can't even remember the name I was using when you were still around. Think I was on Loveschach or The Best Mod In Revleft History.
Revleft's mostly been far calmer, I think. Comparatively less forum drama these days.
I don't think my life's changed very much, unfortunately. No longer in school, working, and spinning my wheels a lot. Thankfully I've been able to travel a little bit, even if I'm otherwise stuck in the temp labor circuit in my hometown.
It's good to see you back, TC!

Welcome back, where good, les turbulent than we used to be, also a bit boring though as many of the older experienced forum veterans left over petty shit, so we have gradually allowed some banned members come back, some worked out really good, some behave, some we where forced to ban again (miles for example).
A few old timers who left voluntarily also came back which is cool.

I can totally relate to this. Not much is the same about my own views when I look back to when I registered. It will be interesting to see how your development has been.

Welcome back!
Weren't you something of a Maoist? Has that changed? I'm assuming that's what you mean when you say your political philosophy has changed, but I don't want to just assume anything.
I don't think I was ever actually self-identified as "Maoist". Instead, I wasn't anti-Mao and recognized positive contributions that he made. Maybe you can find a quote implying otherwise though, I don't know.
I'm not committed to consistently upholding or identifying with any specific dead or living politician or philosopher in their entirety, and I'm not interested in adopting any sub-ideology label.
It seems to me that many people from many different intellectual and political traditions said and wrote a lot of important things that I can recognize as positive contributions. A lot of political movements have been steps in the right direction. None of them have been right all the time in all cases, or have been perfect - and almost every political and philosophical movement and figure has been wrong about a lot.
As a result I don't at present see any reason to identify with a particular label or tradition or movement or figure and insist on its virtue above all others. Likewise I don't see any benefit in denouncing anyone on the left who made progress against what was present in the previous situation where they found themselves. There is just no point in promoting dead personalities - we can learn from them without tacking "ist" on the end of their names and calling ourselves that. Choices might have to be made between specific groups actively contesting power that have a realistic chance of taking it in a short and foreseeable time frame - and thats a situation that some people find themselves in, in some parts of the world today - but it is not the situation that I'm in given where I'm located.
I guess I aspire to trying to call things as I see them on an individual basis and maintain openness to persuasion by other people regardless of where they're coming from.

Temp work seems rough, I hope you find something more permanent if thats what you're looking for. I can identify with the feeling of spinning your wheels.

Hello everyone,

Hey TC, welcome back mate! Those of us who are left have been good I suppose. My brain unfortunately only has limited space and storing revleft personalities isn't so high up on the agenda, but if I remember correctly you used tout some (Maoist?) political stances but was always good for laying down a righteous smack down on the sexism front. If I have confused you with another old member I apologize, but y'know, limited brain space and all.
- What interesting stuff has happened in your life in the last few years?Eh, mostly just spinning my wheels and dealing with worsening physical and mental health issues. I did get my AA, finally came out about my non-heteronormative gender identity, and got my own place, so that's something I suppose.
- How has revleft changed and developed? It's been pretty calm for a while now. Lots of the posting community that was here when you were last around either got banned or fed up and left. Lots of even older members have been cropping back up recently and some of the banned members have come back (Tatty boy for example).
- Whats your take on the world over the last few years? It sucked, does suck, and will continue to suck. So it goes.
- How have you changed? How have you stayed the same?
I've kinda developed an overwhelming apathy towards politics in general. I still hold roughly the same politics I just don't particularly care to fight or even argue for them that much anymore. I can still get the fire lit in me on topics of discrimination though (homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc). I'm mostly just a wallflower here these days though, lurking to keep appraised of the leftist side of world news and occasionally making posts of little consequence (though that may seem little change to you since I sorta remember we tended to disagree a lot on political matters ).
EDIT: Btw, even though I've been rocking the il medico handle for quite a while, I may have been posting under The Doctor back in your day.

I've been quite busy with work and with political stuff. I'm in the swedish CWI section, but also involved with building a new one in Finland. We've had some successes over the last year and a half with establishing a foothold in that country.
It's been hard but rewarding work basically. I'd say I've developed quite a lot politically on a personal level, and keep doing so; overall it's been a positive time even though I'm feeling slightly overworked every now and then..
Here on RevLeft, I became an admin again for about a year ago. Last year I visited both the US and the Netherlands and met people from here; I think I must easily be the single user who has met most Revleft members in real life by now. :)
I'll try and reply to your other questions briefly.
- How has revleft changed and developed?
As others have already told, we've been spared from bigger dramas recently (although there is the occasional one), old members have returned and been unbanned. I would also like to say that we have matured quite a bit as a community.
The BA team and the active veteran userbase consists mostly of real life activists with some level of experience, and I think that has contributed positively to our development. Overall I think we have a good thing going on.
- Whats your take on the world over the last few years?
Well, everything has changed! Back when I started posting here the world seemed quite static, not so much anymore. Things are getting increasingly polarised and the dialectic is closing to it's boiling point in many regards.
The world has finally definitely moved to a new era after the post cold war one. 2011 was very intense, for a while it seemed like the radical era which ended in my early childhood was back in full force, and that was a huge boost in inspiration.
It may be a little calmer now, and there have been backlashes when it comes to class struggle globally, the development of the arab spring etc but I do think it's correct to say that we've entered an era of revolutions and counterrevolutions globally.
Also the continued growth of the far right is a cause of alarm and a call to organise on a totally different level now compared to the last decade, of course.
So yeah, both interesting and scary times.. But definitely more promising than before.

the infighting has shifted from being based in what was rather detailed theoretical disputes to folks simply hating one another because there's a lack of detailed theoretical disputes to hate each other over

Hey Medico,
I wrote a lot about sexism. Like I said earlier, I do not identify as a maoist and I don't think I ever really did identify as a maoist, rather I was sympathetic to some of Mao's positive contributions (very different than adopting Maoism as an ideological position).
Its possible you might be confusing me with Prarie Fire who had similar feminist interests but really was an anti-revisionist (though, not sure she took the position of being a maoist either) (and, in contrast, while I am no longer invested in it, my sympathies in that particular marxist-leninist split were with the so-called "revisionist" camp rather than the anti-revisionists...while maintaining that the sino-soviet split never should have happened...but this is all old history and shouldn't form the basis of contemporary political organization and debate).
Eh, mostly just spinning my wheels and dealing with worsening physical and mental health issues.
Sorry to hear that, I hope things get better for you soon.
I did get my AA,
Whats that?

Huh...well, its hard to manage a good online community full of strong personalities.
It sucked, does suck, and will continue to suck. So it goes.
Not uniformly! Find the parts that don't suck!

My career trajectory is a bit complicated and niche so I don't really want to share much on a public forum as I could potentially be identified from it. I am licensed to practice law (somewhere!) - but at the present moment I'm not actively practicing.
