Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum told his fellow conservatives on Friday that they should stop using the term middle class because it exemplifies class-envy, leftist language.
Santorum, who failed to secure the Republican Party nomination for president in 2012, described his own campaign as different because it had focused on those who are working Americans.
Notice I didnt say middle class, he said.
Why do we use a term I should say that is of the other side? he asked. Why do we, as Republicans who believe in the dignity of every human life, who believe in equality of opportunity for everyone to rise, adopt a class-envy leftist language that divides America against themselves?
Do we really accept the fact there are classes in America? he continued. Then why do we use that term? Why do we adopt their language? We have to stop that.
We should use the term working Americans, he added later. Because unlike them, we believe work is a good thing.

Class doesn't exist? Victory!!! We have Victory!!!
Santorum thinks the US is *gasp* Communist???
I do believe he said 'since when in America do we have classes?' a few months back.
(A bit off topic but...am I the only one who thinks he looks like David Cameron from that angle?)

Yeah, this isn't the first time he's said something like this. He was saying the same thing back when he was running in the Republican primaries for 2012.
Santorum is probably the closest thing to an honest-to-god Mussolini/Italian-style Fascist that has ever held public office in my lifetime.

Yes words mean nothing and fascism is just a nasty word you use to describe things that you don't like.

so he's not only awesome when it comes to homosexual and immigration issues. Gotta love him. What about all those Americans that work their ass off and hardly make ends meet? According to his thoughts, they must be on the same level as all these CEOs, because, well, they're working.

the 'middle class' as a term is utter bunk though. I mean obviously stating that class is a left-wing invention is ludicrous but it's not really much worse than the way other politicians refer to class from a purely cultural point of view (which ultimately ends in the "we're all middle class now" shit)
hey guys maybe we should all write letters to him saying how glad we are that a mainstream politician has stopped making appeals to the 'middle class' and see how apocalyptically furious the reaction is

Yes, Rick, your left/right us versus them mentality does nothing to divide America.
Fucking shit the cognitive dissonance is astounding.

Conservatives here in the States have become masters of projection. They've created a cozy little mind virus, a narrative of persecution, that has resulted in a lovely little cocktail or messianic tendencies and paranoia. The flipside of this is that the American Right has quite visibly become increasingly more and more unhinged, to the point that even the GOP itself is starting to regret the monster they helped unleash.

Santorum's politics is funny in light of his family. His grandfather and father fled Fascist Italy, the former a trade unionist. In fact it appears that the Santorum Clan that stayed behind in Italy became members of the communist party owing to the grandfather's activism. This is more amusing seeing as Santotum in his failed primary run often invoked his grandfather's escape from Italy (just like the struggle against that communazi Obama) and his union cred to deflect criticism of his privilege. Obviously he neglected to mention his grandfather's radicalism. Apparently Rick Santorum used to stay with his relations when he visited Italy, I guess they avoided talking politics. Good reminder that politics aren't totally ingrained from your folks as some if us can relate to.

Unfortunately, this semantic game seems to carry a lot of weight with people.
The only people who claim there is no such thing as 'class', are those whom it would benefit to eliminate class consciousness and the idea of classes. The upper class would love nothing more than to reaffirm the 'we're all in it together' rhetoric as this lends credibility to their unearned lofty position in society. Curiously, these same people are only too quick to use similar language to criticize anybody on the left of the establishment, ironically dismissing anybody who subscribes to the idea of class as a 'leftist'.
America is a curious case. The whole idea of the 'American Dream' is that anybody should be able to achieve anything simply by working hard. Of course, this ignores the fact that people in society do not all start from the same position - somebody who has inherited a large fortune, or a business, from their parents will have to put in significantly less work to succeed that somebody who is born in borderline poverty. Unfortunately the idea of the American Dream remains strong, and is damaging to class consciousness as people who are unable to break out of the working class are seen as lazy, or simply not working as hard as the multimillionaires.
Most of my American friends talk about the 'squeezing' of the middle class as being one of the biggest issues that affect America. Not only are they intelligent people, but they consider themselves leftist. They're not - they're just cookie cutter liberals, but interests of the middle class (rather than the upper class) is rapidly being seen as something the left should be fighting for. Quite frankly, the middle class doesn't exist - at least not in the way they believe it does. The concept of a middle class serves to weaken the working class by dividing it. It's interesting how this is such an alien suggestion to them, the idea that the so-called 'left's' obsession with the middle class in America does nothing but marginalise the working class and assign blame for being unable to 'become' middle class.
With the gap in wealth rapidly growing, class consciousness and the whole idea of class is actually more relevant than ever. A shame then, that class consciousness is at an all-time low.
