View Full Version : The very FIRST socialist state

The first ever socialist state in human history was established in 1885, 37 years before the Soviet Union, and was dissolved by the colonial power of Belgium in 1908. It encompassed a massive landmass and was populated by millions of people and by a multitude of ethnicities, with over 200 languages spoken in the territory. In 1885 all private trade became illegal and the state was the only exchanger of products while labour-power was neither bought nor sold, and production was guided by production quotas. Prices were set by the government, not markets. The law of value was thusly suspended and as such it was a socialist country.
Which country this is?
The Congo Free State of course.
Long live the Glorious Congo Free State! Long live King Leopold II! For a Revolutionary Marxism-Leninism-Leopold the Secondism!

Wonderful comrade. Undoubtly petty bourgeois ultra leftists will try to denigrate the achievements of the Congolese peoples' actually existing socialism, ultimately exposing themselves as the lackeys for imperialism they actually are.

Much like Stalin, King Leopold II is still revered by the people of the Congo as the man who brought civilisation. It turned wilderness into paradise. Of course, some critics say mass murders occurred, some even say 30 million people were killed! LOL. King Leopold II surely also ate babies for breakfast and killed 100 million people with his bare hands. This was all bourgeois-imperialist propaganda of course, so the socialist experiment could be abolished by Belgium. Why would contemporary Congolese consider King Leopold II a hero, a figure of progress and civilisation, if he was a barbaric savage as is suggested in the anti-socialist propaganda?

Of course, any criticisms of some Congolese hootenanny must be that. Or is it because I'm not inclined to sensationalize the philanthropic efforts of King Whitey? Yes, he graciously created a nice habitat for his African subjects.
The actual first Socialist autonomous region was Tortuga Island, 1640 under the Brethren of the Coast. Nearly 3 centuries before the SU.

Bad analysis. Private companies, such as Compagnie du Katanga, the Abir Congo Company and Société Anversoise, were trading on the stock market outside of the control of the Free State government during this period. Ultimately, the Free State was a private business run for the benefit of Leopold II and competed with other private businesses scrambling for control over resources and labour with the added benefit of being able to set laws within the region. It restricted private trade for its own benefit but ultimately the companies remained and continued trading.
