What is this BOINC thing?

Let me quote the old thread (http://www.revleft.com/vb/join-our-boinc-t161260/index.html):

Do you know what BOINC is? Taken from the wikipedia: "The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world."

Basically, with BOINC you can help scientists around the world in areas like mathematics (searching for primes, proving conjectures,...), physics (searching for gravitational waves, pulsars (spinning neutron stars), stars, planets, black holes, aliens, ....), medicine (participating in the research of the HIV virus, development of medicines,...) etc.
Wait, this will grind my computer to a halt, isn't it? I kinda want to use my computer...

Of course you do, we all do. That's why BOINC only uses your CPU idle time. The processor you have in your PC (central processing unit, or CPU) is quite a powerful bit of technology, which you most likely don't use to its full potential most of the time. That is, most of the time your CPU is twiddling its thumbs. BOINC uses that unused power for its scientific mission.

Wait a sec, another party will have access to my computer? Eh, I guess I'm a little paranoid, but...

No one has access to your computer files or anything. No hidden doors or anything like that. What the BOINC client does is download a bit of random data (say, raw data of a scan of a part of the sky) from the central server and process that data. The processed data will then be sent back to the server. At no point does BOINC have access to your personal files, applications or whatever. Read more about its security record here (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/BOINC_Security).

Ok cool. How do I set it up?

This page gives you the instructions (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC) based on your platform of choice.

And where is our team?

I've just created a [email protected] team right here (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=145677). SETI is the Search for Extra-Terrestial Intelligence that scans the sky for artificial signals that are sure signs for civilisations.

If you want to focus on another BOINC project, just post here. There is no reason why it should focus on one or a few projects only. In fact, you can run several projects at the same time on your computer. Your BOINC manager will distribute between the projects.

Participants (this will remain updated):

I just want to add why we are doing this, and therefore i'll quote matevz91's post from the original BOINC-Thread:

So where is the link with communism? Everywhere! Some months ago one of my friends said that communism is conservative... I was pissed at the start, but then I got the idea: many educated people think that way. How can I fight this? By showing them that we communists stand for the development of humankind, science and everything else.
My way of thinking about this matter is such: if we as a communist team reach a high position, then some people will think about it and we will have the opurtinity to show them, what we really stand for. The shock for the majority can be even greater because they think that our areas of interest are only limited to politics.

Hi all, cool. I used to have the [email protected] software screensaver installed in my computer. But i deleted it because I thought that it slows down computer speed. But now that I read this article about how the screensaver only works in the computer iddle time. I think i will download it right now. That way i can help a bit on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence

Actually not a bad idea. We could use them to find revleft. Any extras would be divided up amongst the membership based on activity on the main forums.

Cool. Could you join our SETI team? :)

With our combined computing power (seeing how things are, I'm currently crunching 82% of our team's numbers) this is pretty useless. And it is increasingly getting more useless as mining Bitcoin gets progressively more difficult. By far most mining gets done by computers that were built solely to mine Bitcoin (so-called ASICs (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining#ASIC_Mining)) which would vastly outcompete us.

It is far more efficient to just donate money to Revleft directly.

I was a tad bit sacarcastic, you know.

I'll look into this BOINC thing when I get home to a real computer.

I don't mean to be a jerk but of all the projects to support, why SETI?

SETI just has secured a spot in my heart over the years ;) It is the oldest of all the projects too. But if you want to contribute to any other project (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php), please do so. Setup a team an I'll post about it in the OP :)

I've also noticed that there is a 'friend' system in this, I've sent all of you requests.

As it already has been said, if any of you are interested in working on other projects than SETI too, just say it.

I haven't collected stats about it or anything, all I can really do is parrot the above stuff about it being designed to be low-impact when you need the processor. I might be able to watch it tomorrow and report back though.

You can also set the maximum of your processorpower that should be used by it on a percentage scale. So you don't have to fear that your computer will be slowed down. And as Jemdet Nasr said, it will adjust itself depending on how much CPU Power you're using/needing. So don't worry about that ;)

I have an idea. Have you considered using BOINC as a sort of central economy planing device?

I wonder what happen when there will be supercomputer (or network of PCs) which will be dedicated to manage state economy.

You see, it is obvious, that population of city or state needs certain amount of food, water, clothing and so on. It is obvious that this hypothetical population have certain production power (they can not produce infinite goods). Problem is: how to share it just?

Capitalism uses "free market", which is not free because of corporation, governments, banks and so on. Soviet, Polish Communism had central planning with statistical offices and state prices for everything (as you know, it gives enormous power to party bonzas).

What if we could use computer power to solve equation how much, how often and what do we have to produce? Who needs what and why? How we can share production between everyone?

And last but not least, why anyone considered this idea? :)

After a hiatus, I'm currently running it again. Both SETI and Rosetta.

For Rosetta I have no Revleft team yet, but I'm willing to create one if other people care for running this too.

Boinc (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=boinked) is a rather unfortunate acronym.

I joined the SETI team, problem is my speed is going to be really slow since SETI doesn't support GPU on my system.

I also joined the project "World Community Grid" (which doesn't use GPU) and made a revleft team. Here are the things they work on if anyone wants to join.
