What is this BOINC thing?
Let me quote the old thread (http://www.revleft.com/vb/join-our-boinc-t161260/index.html):
Do you know what BOINC is? Taken from the wikipedia: "The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is an open source middleware system for volunteer and grid computing. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world."
Basically, with BOINC you can help scientists around the world in areas like mathematics (searching for primes, proving conjectures,...), physics (searching for gravitational waves, pulsars (spinning neutron stars), stars, planets, black holes, aliens, ....), medicine (participating in the research of the HIV virus, development of medicines,...) etc.
Wait, this will grind my computer to a halt, isn't it? I kinda want to use my computer...
Of course you do, we all do. That's why BOINC only uses your CPU idle time. The processor you have in your PC (central processing unit, or CPU) is quite a powerful bit of technology, which you most likely don't use to its full potential most of the time. That is, most of the time your CPU is twiddling its thumbs. BOINC uses that unused power for its scientific mission.
Wait a sec, another party will have access to my computer? Eh, I guess I'm a little paranoid, but...
No one has access to your computer files or anything. No hidden doors or anything like that. What the BOINC client does is download a bit of random data (say, raw data of a scan of a part of the sky) from the central server and process that data. The processed data will then be sent back to the server. At no point does BOINC have access to your personal files, applications or whatever. Read more about its security record here (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/BOINC_Security).
Ok cool. How do I set it up?
This page gives you the instructions (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC) based on your platform of choice.
And where is our team?
I've just created a [email protected] team right here (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=145677). SETI is the Search for Extra-Terrestial Intelligence that scans the sky for artificial signals that are sure signs for civilisations.
If you want to focus on another BOINC project, just post here. There is no reason why it should focus on one or a few projects only. In fact, you can run several projects at the same time on your computer. Your BOINC manager will distribute between the projects.
Participants (this will remain updated):
- Q (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=9745906) (founder of the Revleft SETI team)
- Naroc (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=9944867) (SETI)
