Two men have been arrested tonight as protests outside the Convention Centre in Dublin turned violent.

Clashes between anti-austerity protesters and gardai escalated outside the building where the two-day European People's Party congress is being hosted by Fine Gael.

Earlier this evening, around 200 protesters marched from Liberty Hall to the Convention Centre.

The crowd joined a smaller group of people who had congregated at the Centre some time beforehand.

The originally peaceful protest quickly became violent and a gardai has been injured in the fracas.

Approximately 2,000 delegates from all across Europe - including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Presidents of the European Commission and European Council, José Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy - are attending the EPP meeting.

Three charged over protests outside European People’s Party congress

THREE PEOPLE ARRESTED during clashes outside the Convention Centre in Dublin yesterday are to appear before a Dublin court today.
The three people were arrested yesterday for public order offences and have now been charged by gardaí at StoreStreet.
The Convention Centre is currently hosting the European People’s Party congress.
The trio consists of two males, aged 42 and age unknown, and a female, aged 22.
They are due to appear at the Criminal Courts of Justice this morning.
Yesterday saw a small number of anti-austerity protestors gather outside the Convention Center, with a group of up to 200 people joining them in the evening time.
Four gardaí were injured during the scuffles, but remained on duty.
The congress comes to a close this evening.
