The Senate voted 52-47 against the confirmation of lawyer Debo Adegbile to fill the head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights division. I'd've ordinarily not cared about this but it came up that the major reason for this was because of the lobbying of the Fraternal Order of Police to shoot down his confirmation because Adegbile was involved in, though in a minor way, to the Mumia Abu-Jamal case. The police and senators complained that Abegbile was not a good candidate because he supported a "cop-killer".

As best I can gather Abegbile was not involved in a major way in Mumia's trial and his role seems to've been tangeital at best. His contribution seems to've been on behalf of the NAACP when they contributed to writing legal briefs when requesting that Mumia's appeal be heard. Searching on this forum I don't see his name come up in threads related to Mumia, besides one posted yesterday about this issue before it came up for a vote (http://www.revleft.com/vb/attacks-mumia-continue-t187361/index.html?p=2727296).

This underscores the continuing use of the "cop-killer" hysteria by cops and their apologists to rally support as well as showing the vindictive behavior of the police anytime Mumia comes up regardless of the context.
