the "reality" tv show big brother has nothing to do with 1984 besides that it borrows the name of character in the book. its really really crappy. so dont get your hopes up to high.

It's a "reality" tv show that lots of people watch, which makes it profitable to the corporations that create and broadcast it. That's why it remains on the air. I have no idea what you mean about an "illegal government" in reference to a tv show.

Watch the first UK Channel 4 season, it was quite different to all the others since. It was still absurd obviously but there was a difference.

It's a deeply stupid program, but whether it's stupid or not is not a political question, and I don't see how it's "fascist". If anything, I tend to be more suspicious of the notion that TV NEEDS TO BE MONITORED so that we can PROTECT THE YOUTH.

how do u all accept an illegal government?

Reptilian alien mind control.

Seriously, if you want answers, formulate your questions better.

It's a very shitty television show that my parents like, the only way it's fascist is for the reasons others have stated. I can't stand it or other reality show garbage. Illegal government? What would constitute a legal government?

One that puts the people's interests before any economic or greed issues, of course! :o

Indeed! I was asking to OP though :)
I don't think that it's possible to have a legal government, governments are hierarchal organizations. Fuck hierarchy, and fuck governments

We almost got rid of ours but then the shitty channel known as "Five" decided they wanted to keep it going.

Reality television is the worst kind of television there is. It's vapid, superficial rubbish that for some reason seems to be popular. Wether it's awful singing contests or stupid shit like Big Brother, it's all televisual candy for societies that are pretty much televisually diabetic.

you know what is worse? All those shows and contests with famous people in order to remain famous.

I would thoroughly support the following concept though:

Imagine...one house....20 roommates....nobody leaves for 20 weeks. One of them is a serial killer. The weekly elimination rounds would be a killer.

Or...one house. 20 roommates enter...only one can leave. There will be a free for all ever week for an elimination round. They have ten weeks.

Can the people be celebrities or politicians?

This would be even better.

Plus we could do international versions....

Yesterday on Big Brother International Politics edition:

"The American senator has been chased down by the representatives from Iran, Korea and Afghanistan and is still barricaded in the 2nd story bathroom. While the representatives of Somalia and Vietnam have found a ladder in the backyard and try to use it to climb up to the second story window. Meanwhile The EU representative is trying to align itself with the Ukrainian representative against the Russian representative. As we left you the American representative found a cellphone and is currently making frantic calls to the UK representative and the one from Israel to form a new coalition. And the Pakistani representative found an ax in the shed and is now trying to convince the Afghanistan representative to us it on the bathroom door.

What will happen next? Stay tuned for another episode of "Big Brother International Politics edition"

This kind of comes across as elitist and condescending; internet forums are just as inane if not more so at times, including this one. I'd concede that there are big, relevant flaws in competition shows like American Idol, such as the promotion of that narrative that one can get ahead through talent and not institutional privileges, but there's plenty of superficial, vapid rubbish out there, like professional wrestling or something, that people are fans of, and I don't really see any inherent problems with that.

The game ends when they all collaborate to not abide by the rules and escape, or force the producers to coerce them into fighting, which makes for worse television and thus subverts their plans either way.

Not many people stay on forums hours and hours each day, every day. While forums can be inane. they are not necessarily full of bourgeois ideology, reaction and lies. Also, by using a forum you're attempting to interact with other people, think and develop your thought (sometimes). Can the same be said of television? I don't think they're equivalent at all. I don't think there is such a thing as a "television society" however.

Television isn't necessarily full of this either; but both forums and television are.

You could use the same argument against books, which are also one-ways forms of artistic expression or documentation. I think readers or fandoms would probably disagree with your thoughts on that, at least.

We obviously watch something different which happens to be called television in this case. I honestly can't read what you're saying seriously. TV is a passive thing telling you what you're looking at most of the time like you're a fucking idiot. Where people with completely different experiences of life tell you what's what. At least with forums and now I'm talking of forums in general most people are workers and that makes a huge difference ideologically. C'mon, books offer much more. They are much more capable of encouraging creative thinking, learning and reflection. I don't think there is a great deal of what you call "artistic expression" in television. Most of it is banal, reinforcing and commercially inspired. Of course, there are exceptions. More and more people can't actually stand to watch TV and are actively avoiding it. Some television like in the US I would regard as completely unwatchable.

A much more interesting conversation might be had on "artistic expression". The meaning, relevance, content etc Or what we regard as "culture" which is nearly a completely middle and ruling class enterprise.

There's bad, shallow books that require very little of the reader as well; one can be more selective because there's a much wider variety, I suppose, but the internet is soon closing that gap as far as videos go (I consider all audiovisual entertainment to be the same type of media unless it is interactive; films, television shows, internet videos, etc.). I don't think one medium is objectively worse than the other, honestly, because it depends upon what the artist does with that metaphorical canvas.

It's a way for people to see reality. Too bad the youth can get what they see on tv and the bad things that come along with it..
