I agree with them, however they are really bad at making their point. The death metal and gimp masks probably do more to detract from their cause than add to it.

I think they made their point perfectly. They tried to express themselves and were literally whipped for it. There's a whole host of connotations there about patriarchy and the state.

Now I'm not saying this is right, but its the result of their marketing strategy.

What they are good at, is drawing attention to themselves, which is great as the more liberal western media is having a field day covering them, helping to build international pressure.

In all honesty I don't know how the issue of LGBT rights should be tackled in Russia, underground groups giving people support etc seem to be having a good effect, however Putin is running an autocratic state, akin to the Soviets or Romanov Dynasty.

A lot of malcontents are not going to be conformists. Their modes of expression are going to be different, why should they reflect the norms when the norms are malignant? By commercialising their image, by trying to appear respectable, they lose their shock factor, they become easy to drown out by an autocracy that doesn't have any trouble with mediocrities. And honestly, why should they? Compromising the art form, whatever it might be, to allow for the message... I believe the music they play is punk music, whatever many people might have to say about that genre, that is one thing that is true to its ideals. No compromise, no pasaran, whatever. It's about defiance.
